Liverpool offered £59m midfielder that chose Real Madrid over them in 2022

Liverpool tried to sign Aurelien Tchouameni from AS Monaco in 2022 but were beaten to the punch by Real Madrid, who signed him for £68.3 million, with £17m of add-ons.

The French star remains Real Madrid’s fifth most expensive signing of all time but just three years later, he could be sold with claims being made he’s been offered to Liverpool by his agent.

The Reds’ midfield is already shaping up to be the best in the Premier League again next season. Between Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai and imminent new signing, Florian Wirtz, there is a lot to be excited about.

Last summer, Arne Slot was unable to sign Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi which led to the incredible revelation of Gravenberch in the holding midfield role. The result? The 23-year-old won the Premier League Young Player of the Season award.

Now, however, reports continue to link Slot with a new defensive midfielder despite Gravenberch’s shining form at the base of the Liverpool midfield this season.

Liverpool have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Tchouameni from Real Madrid for £59m

According to AS and Fichajes, Real Madrid no longer want to hold onto Tchouameni in addition to David Alaba and Fran Garcia. The midfielder has been offered to Liverpool by his agent.

Other clubs, including Chelsea, Juventus and Manchester United have been quoted a price tag of £59m if they are interested in pursuing a deal to sign the French midfielder.

Tchoameni may not be viewed as essential by Madrid but he is by no means a bad player all of a sudden. The 25-year-old is versatile as well and is capable of playing at centre-back if needed.

That said, Liverpool should only move to sign him if they are going to play him as a defensive midfielder which is undoubtedly where he plays his best football.

But again, it remains to be seen if Slot truly wants to sign a defensive midfielder to replace Gravenberch.

It would be a strange move considering how good the young Dutch star has been since Slot moved him into the No.6 role.
