Rutgers brings on Spencer Brown being as the head of sports performance

BERNARSVILLE, N.J. – Spencer Brown is the new director of sports performance for Rutgers football, replacing Jay Butler in the role. The addition of Brown was announced on Monday afternoon by head coach Greg Schiano.

Brown was most recently the director of strength and conditioning staff for Dartmouth. Prior to his stint in the Ivy League, he was at Moravian College.

When Schiano returned to the program in 2020, Butler was brought back in to his role on the strength staff. There is a long history between Schiano and Butler as he was part of Schiano's staff during his first stint at Rutgers and then followed the head coach to the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

''I don't get into the particulars of personnel moves, so I'll stay away from the reasons why. It's just something that I felt like we needed to do, but it was really hard," Schiano said on Monday prior to the start of his golf classic at Fiddler's Elbow.

''Jay has been a tremendous contributor to this program and to when we were in Tampa. So, we've been together 18 years, it was just something that I felt like we needed to do. But it was really, really hard. You know, people don't understand that. If you've never had to do those things. It's incredibly difficult, especially when he's a friend, and I've watched their family grow up with our family and but the tough part of being the head coach is you have to do what you believe is right and you're not always correct in what you do, but you have to do what you think is right.''

As for Brown, he is a former linebacker at Lafayette where he was a 2008 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
