After a long and winding road in the Jaire Alexander saga, both sides agreed to part ways. Alexander will not be with the Green Bay Packers this season.

While the reports swirled about a potential reunion in Green Bay, the writing was on the wall for Alexander and the Packers. It came down to two things: Availability and money.

Starting with the latter, Green Bay owed Alexander $53.66 million over the last two years of his contract. By releasing him, the Packers will take on a $7.52 million dead-cap hit in 2025 and $9.52 million next year.

However, they open more than $46 million in cap space, the third-most in the NFL. Keep that in mind as they work on a new deal for Elgton Jenkins and Zach Tom.

As far as availability goes, Alexander isn’t on the field all that much anymore. The former Louisville product has played in only 16 games over the past two seasons. And even in those games, he was on a play count. His inability to stay healthy greatly influenced Green Bay’s decision to cut ties with the former first-round pick.

There were reports that the Packers had a trade in place with the Buffalo Bills before the draft. However, like all 32 teams, the Bills didn’t want to pay all of Alexander’s contract.

Where does that leave Green Bay’s cornerback room?

As it stands, here are the corners who Green will most likely have on the roster or have a legit chance to make the team out of camp: free-agent acquisition Nate Hobbs; return man Keisean Nixon; three seventh-round picks in Carrington Valentine, Kalen King, and Micah Robinson; and undrafted free agent Kamal Hadden.

Suddenly, the Packers have one of the weakest cornerback groups in the NFL. Still, they’ve played without Alexander for the better part of the last two years and have been serviceable. Now that their star is officially out the door, it will be up to defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley to get the most out of the guys in Green Bay’s cornerback room.

Still, Packers fans will always have the memories of Alexander. The swag he brought on and off the field after Green Bay drafted him in 2018 won’t soon be forgotten. Alexander was arguably the best corner in football when he was healthy.

From the griddy to the seatbelt to the interactions with the media, there was never a dull moment with Alexander. Now, he’ll be wearing different colors next season. Whether or not the Packers were wise to take this step remains to be seen, but they felt they had to do it from a fiscal and physical perspective.

At long last, the Packers can move forward with what they have and focus on getting their group ready to play meaningful snaps in 2025.
