Arsenal's loss could be Man Utd's gain as'concrete'goalkeeper option emerges

Manchester United have rekindled their pursuit of Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen as Ruben Amorim scopes out new number one options, according to a report.

The Red Devils have relied on Andre Onana in between the posts for the past two seasons, but the former Ajax and Inter Milan's time at Old Trafford has been blighted by a series of errors.

Head coach Amorim has publicly backed Onana when questioned about his mistakes, but the Cameroonian is now said to be in advanced talks over a move to the Saudi Pro League.

As Altay Bayindir has also failed to prove that he is number one material, Man United will be expected to enter the goalkeeping market if Onana is sold in the coming weeks.

According to TEAMTalk, Barcelona's Ter Stegen is now back on the Red Devils' radar, as the 20-time English champions aim to take advantage of the uncertainty created by Joan Garcia's arrival.

Ter Stegen among 'most concrete names' on Man Utd list

The reigning La Liga title holders are thought to have won the race to sign Espanyol's Garcia, beating Premier League giants Arsenal to the Spaniard.

Without any more movement at Camp Nou, Garcia would be competing with Ter Stegen for the number one spot next season, as Wojciech Szczesny's deal expires at the end of the month.

However, the latter made a huge impression after coming out of retirement and is expected to be given at least a short-term contract extension, which could push Ter Stegen out of the door.

The Germany international has allegedly been told that he does not figure in Hansi Flick's plans for 2025-26, and he is now one of the most 'concrete names' on Man United's transfer wishlist.

Chelsea are also said to have run the rule over Ter Stegen, but the Blues abandoned their pursuit of the 33-year-old to focus on securing a deal for AC Milan's Mike Maignan.

On the other hand, Man United chiefs apparently value the knowledge and leadership qualities that Ter Stegen would bring to the team, whether as Onana's replacement or his superior.

Heralded as one of the planet's best goalkeepers during his prime years, Ter Stegen has been guarding the Barcelona sticks for over a decade, joining from Borussia Monchengladbach for a mere £10.1m in 2014.

The 33-year-old inherited the post previously filled by Victor Valdes - a tough act to follow - and has since won 19 major honours at the club, including the Champions League in his first season.

From 422 appearances in a Barcelona kit, Ter Stegen has managed 175 shut-outs, including 26 in the 2022-23 La Liga season, the joint-most in a single campaign in the competition.

Ter Stegen's Barcelona contract still runs for another three years, but La Blaugrana coped just fine without the German last term, where he played just nine times due to a severe knee injury.

If Flick's side are successful in keeping Szczesny, and Garcia's move goes through without a hitch, Ter Stegen could be deemed surplus to requirements at Camp Nou, which spells optimism for Man United's hopes of a cut-price swoop.
