Adam Peters is always looking for ways to improve the Washington Commanders roster. The general manager is laser-focused with the team's best interests always at the forefront of his mind. He's also adopted a ruthless approach that keeps urgency high in the locker room.
If Peters believes more is needed, he won't hesitate to make changes. The Commanders have been ultra-aggressive this offseason. That won't stop if the right opportunities present themselves between now and their Week 1 opener against the New York Giants.
A couple of interesting developments around the league will provoke discussions between those in power. Cornerback Jaire Alexander was released by the Green Bay Packers after no willing trade partner came forward. He'd be a tremendous acquisition to an already strong unit, especially if the two-time Pro Bowler got a better run of luck on the injury front.
Commanders should consider signing Germaine Pratt after surprise release
The other centers on Germaine Pratt, who was released by the Cincinnati Bengals to save almost $6 million on their salary cap. This raised a few eyebrows despite having his trade request granted earlier this offseason. Now, the prolific linebacker gets the chance to choose his next destination.
Pratt was a team captain in Cincinnati who gained a career-high in tackles last season with 143. He struggled in coverage on occasion, but his run-stopping prowess was nothing short of exceptional once again. That would help the Commanders considerably, even though they still have Bobby Wagner and Frankie Luvu to depend upon.
Adding another proven performer to the defensive second level wouldn't hurt. This would also take the pressure off Jordan Magee and Kain Medrano, who are both inexperienced and lack the polish needed to generate significant reps on the rotation.
Much will depend on the money involved, but there's a lot to like about Pratt's fit in Washington. The former third-round pick out of North Carolina State has a lot of traits the Commanders look for. He'd slot seamlessly into the team's culture shift under head coach Dan Quinn. This would also be an exciting landing spot for the player on a team ready to contend right now.
There's no harm in trying. The Commanders might be content with what they have currently, which is understandable. Even so, there's no doubt Pratt could be an asset.
Interest will be high in the player now that he's available for nothing. It'll be fascinating to see if that drives up the price in the coming days or weeks, but don't be surprised if the Commanders get involved.
The Commanders should shoot their shot. Whether that'll be enough is another matter.
