The 29-year-old is now in the final 12 months of his current contract, and with that comes the risk of losing him for nothing if a renewal can’t be agreed.

Speculation has been rife over his future this past week with countless reports casting doubt over his future with the Rossoneri, and it looks as though we’re now entering a decisive period to determine where he’ll be playing next season.
According to [Antonio Vitiello](https://x.com/AntoVitiello/status/1932125593438699816), talks are ongoing between Milan and Chelsea to find an agreement, with the Rossoneri said to be demanding over €20m, while he adds that the French shot-stopper wants the move to the Premier League side and has communicated his wish to the club.
Further, it’s suggested that if no agreement is reached between the clubs, Maignan could play out the remainder of his deal with us and leave as a free agent next summer.
There’s a lot to digest in that report, but from a Milan perspective, it’s arguably starting to feel as though agreeing a deal with Chelsea is now becoming the best possible outcome.
If Maignan is eager to leave, we shouldn’t stand in his way and keep an unhappy player for next season, provided that they meet our valuation and we’re able to identify and acquire a suitable replacement.
Additionally, were he to stay and see out his contract, we would lose him for nothing in a year’s time and so question marks would have to be raised over whether or not we should keep him in place as our starting goalkeeper instead of establishing his long-term successor sooner rather than later.
Ultimately, it’s a shame that we’re discussing an exit for Maignan at all, as particularly with the other departures being touted this summer, we could do with some stability and consistency in the side next season for Massimiliano Allegri’s first campaign back in charge.
Based on the report above and others like it in recent days though, it doesn’t sound as though that is likely to happen, and so an exit, terms of which must meet our demands, seems like the best solution for all concerned.
