West Ham United Loan Review: 2024-25 Season

The Hammers have had a host of players out on loan. Many who were young players out gaining valuable first team experience but also others who fell out of favour and needed gametime.

Let’s review the loanees and see how they performed during the 2024-2025 season.

George Earthy

Club: Bristol City

Appearances: 40

Goals: 3

Assists: 1

After breaking into the West Ham first team in the previous season and scoring for his boyhood club on the final day, there was a lot of interest surrounding Earthy and his loan move.

His loan move to Bristol City, which started in August, was the first of his career as he looked to experience first team football regularly for the first time.

Before the new year, Earthy struggled to break into the starting lineup, and his move looked to be faltering, but after the turn of the year, it all changed for the 20-year-old.

He then began to start regularly and despite not scoring or assisting as much as he would have liked, Earthy became a fans favourite as he played for the badge. His performance against Middlesbrough stood out as he scored a brace, which were his first goals for the club.

It ended up being a successful season for Bristol City, who are known for finishing mid-table, but ended up finishing sixth, gaining themselves a playoff spot. The Robins were knocked out of the playoffs by Sheffield United, but Earthy gained valuable experience and was awarded the Bristol City Young Player of the Year Award at the end of the season. It will be interesting to see if he can break intoGraham Potter’s side next season, and to do that, he'll need to impress in pre-season.

Maxwel Cornet

Clubs: Southampton & Genoa

Appearances: 11

Goals: 2

Assists: 1

Cornet joined Italian side **Genoa**in the January transfer window. He had already spent the first part of the season out on loan at Premier League side Southampton but failed to make an impact, only making four appearances.

After joining West Ham in 2022, there was a real buzz around Cornet after impressing at Burnley. However, his time at Hammers saw him riddled with injuries. This was also the case after joining Genoa as he missed 10 games during in his loan spell through injury.

He managed to score two goals in the seven games he featured in for Genoa which is one more than he scored in the 37 appearances he made for the Hammers.

With his recent injury record it’s most likely he’ll be sold this summer but with Graham Potter now as head coach, he may want to look at him in pre-season.

Club: Paris FC

Appearances: 6

The Frenchman joined West Ham from Ligue 2 club Paris FC in the summer of 2024. He signed a five year deal with the Hammers. After signing for the club he returned to the French side on loan for the season.

In the 2023/24 season, he was a regular in the U19S and featured numerous times for the club’s B side.

This season he’s made six appearances for the club’s first team who secured promotion back to the French topflight.

Kanté is one for the future and will most likely remain with the U23 squad for the season, but may also be allowed to go out on loan and gain more valuable experience.

Michael Forbes

Clubs: Bristol Rovers & Colchester United

Appearances: 12

Assists: 1

The 21-year-old spent the first half of the season out on loan at Bristol Rovers but was then recalled due to picking up a hamstring injury. It seemed he was approaching full fitness so was sent back out on loan to League Two side Colchester United. However, he failed to make single appearance as he continued to struggle with a hamstring injury.

Forbes, who joined theHammersin 2020, became a mainstay in the side’s U18S and U21S before going out on loan. He’s also captained both sides.

He went on to make 12 appearances for Bristol Rovers across four different competitions, grabbing one assist.

If he can get back to full fitness, then a loan move seems most likely so he can gain more first team experience.

Kurt Zouma

Club: Al-Orobah

Appearances: 19

Goals: 1

Zouma spent the 2024-2025 season out on loan in the Saudi Pro League. When he first joined the Hammers, he became a linchpin in the defence, but injuries hindered the back end of the Frenchman’s career in claret and blue. Surprisingly he was named club captain at the start of the 2023-2024 season after Declan Rice’s departure by then boss David Moyes

It was clear last summer that former manager Julien Lopetegui did not want Zouma in his squad. The 30-year-old was expected to sign for United Arab Emirates side Shabab Al-Ahli but failed his medical, putting his move away from the club in doubt.

Eventually, Zouma managed to secure a move away from the club as he joined Al-Orobah on a one year loan where he feautured 19 times. Zouma captained the side on numerous occasions and scored his only goal for the club on the last day of the season.

Unfortunately for him and Al-Orobah, they were relegated from the first tier in Saudi Arabia after finishing 17th (out of 18 teams). There had been rumours that West Ham had a one year contract extension for the Frenchman, but the club won’t be activating the clause as they have confirmed Zouma will be leaving when his current deal expires on the 30th of June.

Junior Robinson

Club: Sutton United

Appearances: 1

The 21-year-old joined National League side Sutton United on loan in February until the end of the season. Having made over 100 appearances for **West Ham**’s U18s and U21s a loan move seemed ideal to gain valuable senior football experience.

However, Robinson only went on to make one appearance for the U’s when he featured for 62 minutes in a defeat against Hartlepool United. He then returned to the Hammers and featured numerous times in the Premier League 2 as well as the Premier League 2 playoffs.

With his loan move proving unsuccessful, it seems most likely that Robinson will be allowed to leave on loan again with the hope this time of securing first team experience on a regular basis.

Regan Clayton

Club: Dagenham & Redbridge

Appearances: 11

Clayton joined National League side Dagenham & Redbridge in February and made 11 appearances, starting seven times.

This was the 20-year-olds first move away from the club he’s been at since he was ten years old. Unfortunately for him and Dagenham they were relegated from the National League on the final day of the season, meaning they’ll play in the National League South next season.

Having already played several times for **West Ham**’s youth teams, Clayton already had experience; just not regularly in men’s senior football, which he’s managed to achieve whilst on loan. The defender will most likely go back out on loan but has been struggling with a knee injury for the last few years, so any move will depend on that.

Freddie Potts

Club: Portsmouth

Appearances: 38

Goals: 1

Assists: 4

Related to former Hammers, Steve and Dan Potts, there is a lot of expectation surrounding Freddie, which he has certainly been living up to.

After spending the 2023/2024 season on loan at League One Wycombe Wanderers and picking up their player of the year as well as supporters’ player of the year, the next loan for Potts was crucial for his development. He ended up spending the season out on loan at Championship side Portsmouth.

Potts became a mainstay in the South Coast sides midfield and helped them avoid relegation and finish five points clear of the drop. He featured 38 times, starting 36 of those. The step up from League One to the Championship was not an issue.

With how well Potts performed he earned himself a new West Ham contract midway through the season, which will run until 2029. There have been rumours about Potts returning to Portsmouth next season on another loan, but Pompey manager John Mousinho shut those rumours down saying *'It's most likely we won't see him again next season, unfortunately, so it was a really good moment. I suspect he's going to go back and challenge at **West Ham*’.

The 21-year-old has been very vocal about wanting to play for his boyhood club. After signing his new contract he commented on his dream to play for West Ham.

“I’ve wanted to become a West Ham player my whole life. My goal is to break into the first team and show what I can do at the highest level.”

It’s been reported that Potter will look at Potts in pre-season, so the midfielder, who has already made six first team appearances for the Hammers, will be looking to impress and break into the team for the 2024-2025 season.

Patrick Kelly

Club: Doncaster Rovers

Appearances: 38

Goals: 3

Kelly spent the 2024-2025 season on loan at League Two side Doncaster Rovers. It was the 20-year-olds first move away from the Hammers since joining from Coleraine in 2022. He’s played a major role in **West Ham**’s youth team success in recent years.

He featured 38 times for the Rovers across four different competitions. It was successful season for Kelly and his teammates as they secured promotion to League One after finishing top of the table.

Playing over 1,900 minutes, Kelly has gained valuable experience, and it seems the most viable option will be to go back out on loan, either to a League One or Championship side.

Club: Pogoń Szczecin

Appearances: 6

The Brazilian joined West Ham on a free transfer in 2023 from Sao Paulo. For the second part of last season he spent his time on loan at polish side Pogoń Szczecin.

Since he joined, he’s gone to make four appearances for the polish sides first team and has featured twice for the reserve team. He broke into the first team in the final month of the season and went on to make four consecutive starts.

Having only made four appearances for Pogoń Szczecin’s senior side, Luizão will need to go back out on loan if he wants to break into the West Ham first team. Especially with his contract ending in the summer of next year.

Nayef Aguerd

Club: Real Sociedad

Appearances: 36

Aguerd spent the season out on loan at Spanish side Real Sociedad. The Moroccan found game time hard when Moyes was at West Ham and was not interested in staying once Lopetegui became boss.

He did not struggle for game time in Spain however, making 36 appearances across three competitions. He played 21 games in La Liga, starting all of them. He also featured prominently in Sociedad’s Europa League run making 11 appearances.

The 29-year-old impressed at the start of the season with clubs like **Barcelona**and Real Madrid rumoured to be interested in him. It was also said that Sociedad regretted not putting a buy option in deal with how well he was performing. However, in the second half of the season he struggled for form, meaning the Spanish club weren’t interested in sorting a new deal with West Ham.

It's also unlikely that Aguerd will play for the East London club again, as it’s been rumoured that he has no interest in coming back to the club for pre-season with many clubs interested in him, despite Potter seemingly wanting him back.

Callum Marshall

Club: Huddersfield Town

Appearances: 46

Goals: 10

Assists: 4

Since joining West Ham in 2022 from Northern Irish side Linfield, Marshall has been very prolific for the **East London**’s youth sides. At the end of the 2023-2024 season he joined promotion hopefuls at the time West Bromwich Albion. However, he only went on to make three appearances.

Marshall’s next loan choice had to be key for his development as he struggled to impress in the Championship. Then led to him joining League One Huddersfield Town.

He went on to make 46 appearances for the Terries, making it into double figures for goals, with ten and grabbing four assists. As well as that, the 20-year-old picked up Huddersfield’s Player of the Year Award and the Blue & White Members Club Player of the Year Award.

After impressing in League One, it’s very likely that Marshall will go back out on loan, this time to a Championship side.

Gideon Kodua

Club: Wycombe Wanderers

Appearances: 25

Goals: 3

Assists: 1

After spending the 2023-2024 season on loan at Wycombe Wanderers, Kodua returned to West Ham where he signed a new two-year deal with club and then returned to the Chairboys for a second year on loan.

During his second season with the club, he made 25 appearances and scored his first goals in senior football. It ended up being a successful season for the 20-year-old and Wycombe as they finished 5th in League One meaning they ended up in the playoffs. However they were knocked out in the semi-finals by Charlton Athletic.

Despite being only 20, Kodua has lots of experience as well as leadership qualities. He was captain of the West Ham Youth team who lifted the FA Youth Cup in 2023.

Having played in League One for two years, it seems likely that Kodua will be loaned out but to the Championship, so he gain even more valuable experience.

Clubs: Motherwell & Debreceni VSC

Appearances: 9

The Hungarian joined the Hammers in 2019. He turned down multiple offers from other high-profile European clubs. Since then, he’s featured regularly for **West Ham**’s youth teams and has had loan spells at **Stevenage**and Dutch side FC Den Bosch.

Last summer, Hegyi signed a new contract with West Ham until 2027, with an option of a further year. He then joined Scottish Premiership side Motherwell. However, he only featured twice, with both appearances coming in Scottish League Cup.

The 22-year-old was then recalled by the East London club and sent back out on loan, where he joined Hungarian side Debreceni VSC.

He started the first seven games, keeping three clean sheets, but then didn’t feature in the starting eleven again for the rest of the season. After signing a new deal last summer, Hegyi will most likely be sent back out on loan to gain more experience.

Brad Dolaghan

Club: Aldershot Town

Appearances: 4

The 20-year-old joined the Hammers last summer after a successful trial for National League South side Worthing.

Dolaghan made 11 appearances for West Ham U21s before joining National League side Aldershot Town in February. He featured three times in the National League and made one appearance in the FA Trophy, which Aldershot went on to win, beating Spennymoor Town 3-0 at Wembley Stadium.

Unfortunately for the forward, his time at West Ham will be coming to an end as they’ve announced he will be departing on June 30th after only one season with the club.
