Jason Kidd could be traded to the Knicks this offseason

There is reportedly mutual interest between Jason Kidd and the New York Knicks for Kidd to become the franchise’s next head coach. Several pathways exist for Kidd to join the Knicks, including a potential trade from the Mavericks.

The New York Knicks are continuing their head coaching search following the dismissal of Tom Thibodeau after their loss to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals.

One of the leading candidates for the position, according to multiple reports, is current Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd.

Although Kidd remains under contract with the Mavericks through next season, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reports that there is mutual interest between Kidd and the Knicks regarding the head coaching role.

"There’s mutual interest between the Knicks and Jason Kidd," Windhorst said.

"There’s this whole thing about asking for permission — you don’t ask for permission to hire another team’s coach. When you ‘ask’, you’re going to hire them. The Mavericks have three options, one being negotiating a trade," he noted.

Windhorst also noted that Kidd has previously been traded as a head coach, when the Brooklyn Nets sent him to the Milwaukee Bucks for two second-round picks in 2014.

Kidd has been the Mavs' head coach for the past four seasons, leading them to the NBA Finals in 2024. He also has connections to New York, having played his final NBA season with the Knicks in 2012–13.
