Red Sox Promote Little-Known Pitcher With Tremendous era

The Boston Red Sox selected the contract of right-hander Brian Van Belle on Monday.

Who?

We don’t blame you for not being familiar with the rookie who has never made an appearance in the big leagues, but would you believe us if we told you that he had a 2.29 ERA with Triple-A Worcester?

Van Belle, 28, joined the organization as an undrafted free agent in 2020, spending the last five years clawing his way through the organization before exploding onto the scene in 2025. BVB has absolutely shoved in a mostly starting role with the WooSox, going 5-1 with that stellar earned run average and striking out 41 batters in 51 innings.

Van Belle will wear No. 77, and likely will be used during this upcoming series against the Tampa Bay Rays. Aroldis Chapman, Greg Weissert, Brennan Bernardino, Justin Wilson, Garrett Whitlock and Zack Kelly all appeared in Sunday’s victory over the New York Yankees. Robert Stock did, as well, though he was designated for assignment after a rough outing to make room for the promotion.

It’ll remain to be seen if the rookie can match those stellar numbers in the big leagues, but after a long journey throughout the minors, he’ll have his chance.
