Journalist shuts down rumours suggesting Liverpool star turned down move to Saudi giants, claims player is open to possible move

close

A journalist has dismissed reports that Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has rejected a move to Saudi Arabia. The 25-year-old Uruguayan has been at Anfield since arriving from Benfica in the summer of 2022.

However, Nunez has had a rather modest spell with the Reds, bagging 40 goals and 26 assists in 143 games across competitions. He had seven goals and assists apiece in the recently concluded 2024-25 season, including five goals and three assists in 30 games in the club's triumphant Premier League campaign.

Despite being contracted to Arne Slot's side till 2028, the Uruguayan faces an uncertain future at the club. There were reports of Nunez turning down a move to the Kingdom, but Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna has said that the player remains open to the possiblity but hasn't yet received an offer.

"Not true and has not yet received any official offer... and he is open to the a move to Saudi," tweeted Aouna.

Liverpool.com reported that Nunez is open to a move away from Anfield, having arrived three summers ago.

As per the publication (via Foot Mercato), 2023-24 Saudi Pro League champions Al-Hilal could focus on Nunez after being apparently snubbed by Victor Osimhen. No formal offer has been made to the Reds, though, as reported by Aouna.

Liverpool celebrate their Premier League title.

Liverpool are coming off a successful first season under new boss Arne Slot, who succeeded the legendary Jurgen Klopp last summer. The former Feyenoord tactician didn't take much long to make an impact.

Slot's side ended Manchester City's four-year Premier League stranglehold as they reigned supreme in the English top flight for the first time since their 2020 triumph. The Reds finished 10 points clear of second-placed Arsenal, who finished second for the third straight season, winning 25 of 38 games.

The Reds also reached the EFL Cup final - losing 2-1 to Newcastle United - and lost to eventual winners PSG on penalties in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.
