Virginia Tech basketball: Top prospect Neoklis Avdalas verbally commits to Hokies, barring NBA…

The Virginia Tech Hokies and head basketball coach Mike Young could be on the verge of landing a transformative commitment. Neoklis Avdalas, a 6-foot-8 wing from Athens, Greece, will reportedly sign with Virginia Tech if he opts out of the 2025 NBA draft. He visited Blacksburg on an official visit in May.

Avdalas currently plays for Peristeri B.C. in the Greek Basketball League and was named the Greek League’s Best Young Player in 2024. Before Peristeri, Avdalas played one season for ASK Karditsas in the Greek League. Avdalas began his professional career in 2021 for Panathinaikos, one of Greece’s top teams. He was only 15 when he began his professional career.

Avdalas played on the same pro team as former Hokies Ahmed Hill and Jarell Eddie.

Avdalas is considered a second-round pick for the upcoming draft, but many believe that with a year or two of college experience, he will be a lottery pick. If he comes to Blacksburg, Avdalas will likely become VT’s top scoring threat immediately, giving Young plenty of flexibility with his lineup. Avdalas can play small forward and both guard positions.

Avdalas has until June 15 to remove his name from the 2025 NBA draft, which takes place on June 25. Avdalas would join a Virginia Tech with multiple newcomers, including Jailen Bedford (UNLV transfer), Izaiah Pasha (Delaware transfer) and Amani Hansberry (WVU transfer). Next season’s Hokies will also feature freshmen Christian Gurdak, Sincere Jones, Solomon Davis and Antonio Dorn. Young retained most of his top players from last season, most notably Tobi Lawal, Jaden Schutt, Tyler Johnson and Ben Hammond.

We can’t stress this enough: Avdalas would be a game-changing addition for the Hokies.
