Approach made: Man Utd have now opened talks to sign£84m star - report

Manchester United had a disappointing season in the Premier League. They finished 15th in the table with only 42 points.

The lack of quality in the final third was visible, and manager Ruben Amorim may want multiple attacking additions this summer.

The hierarchy have already signed Matheus Cunha to bolster the attack, but there could be more activity in the coming weeks.

United are in talks to sign Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, and Sky Sports claim that an initial approach has been made for Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres.

The Red Devils are exploring the conditions of a potential deal for the striker. Amorim is a big admirer, having managed him during his time at Sporting CP.

Gyokeres has a £84 million release clause in his contract, but he has a gentleman’s agreement to depart Sporting CP for £58m.

Gyokeres would be a huge statement signing

The Sweden international signed for Sporting CP from Coventry City for £17m in 2023 and has since developed into a potent scoring striker.

Gyokeres registered 43 goals and 15 assists in his debut campaign and managed to better that tally with 54 goals and 13 assists last term.

The Swede is prepared for the next step in his career. A Premier League move appeals to him and United could end up as his next destination.

Arsenal and Chelsea have been linked with Gyokeres as they can offer Champions League football, which the 27-year-old is prioritising this summer.

However, Portuguese sources have claimed that the striker has not ruled out a reunion with Amorim if Arsenal or Chelsea don’t make an offer.

That could be a realistic possibility. Arsenal are clearly prioritising a transfer for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko at the current point in time.

Chelsea, on the other hand, want to pursue a deal for Eintracht Frankfurt ace Hugo Ekitike despite purchasing Liam Delap earlier this month.

This could open the door for United to land Gyokeres. He would be a huge statement signing and would instantly become an undisputed starter.

The transfer package may not prove a stumbling block so long as Sporting CP are prepared to accept staggered payments over several seasons.
