Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has delivered a significant update on the future of Martin Zubimendi, amid fresh reports suggesting Real Madrid are preparing a late bid to hijack Arsenal’s move for the Real Sociedad midfielder.
Zubimendi, 26, has been a long-standing target for the Gunners, with manager Mikel Arteta keen to reinforce his midfield options. The Spain international, who played a key role in his country’s Euro 2024 triumph, has a £51 million release clause in his contract, a fee Arsenal are reportedly ready to trigger.
However, Spanish outlet AS reported on Sunday that Real Madrid have entered the race, with new manager Xabi Alonso eager to reunite with Zubimendi, having previously coached him at Sociedad’s B team. Alonso has allegedly made the midfielder his top priority, with Real preparing a final push to secure his signature.

Despite the speculation, Romano has clarified that Zubimendi is firmly on course to join Arsenal. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano revealed that a full agreement is already in place between the player and the North London club.

“My understanding is that Martin Zubimendi has agreed on absolutely everything to become a new Arsenal player,” Romano stated. “There is an agreement with the club since a long time ago. I already said a few months ago the ‘here we go,’ because from what I heard, Zubimendi accepted everything Arsenal offered.”

Romano also confirmed that Zubimendi has spoken directly with Arteta and chose to delay formal proceedings out of respect for Sociedad until the season concluded.
“The deal is agreed,” Romano continued. “They’ve already exchanged documents. It’s just about the medical, signing the contract, taking pictures, then Zubimendi will be an Arsenal player.”
He did, however, offer a note of caution, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the transfer market: “If Real Madrid or any other clubs will be able to change this story while the documents are ready… never say never. But Arsenal are convinced he will be their player this summer.”
