Arsenal fans have been left in a state of confusion and concern over the future of midfielder Thomas Partey, after the Ghanaian’s name appeared on the Premier League’s official list of released players despite earlier indications from the club that contract talks were still ongoing.

The 31-year-old’s unexpected inclusion has sparked widespread speculation about his status, just weeks after Arsenal published their own retained list, which noted that discussions were underway with Partey, Chloe Kelly, and Michal Rosiak. All three players are out of contract on June 30, 2025.

“Discussions are ongoing, and once matters are finalised between all parties, we will communicate in due course,” Arsenal’s June 4 statement read, suggesting that Partey remained in manager Mikel Arteta’s plans. Partey made 52 appearances across all competitions in the 2024/25 season and played a vital role alongside Declan Rice in Arsenal’s midfield.

However, his inclusion in the Premier League’s official release list, with Rosiak notably absent has raised alarm among fans and analysts alike. Posts on X, including one from @stuafc71, suggest that Arsenal may not have submitted a formal contract offer, with only a verbal proposal made so far.

This has fuelled fears that Partey could leave the club on a free transfer this summer, just as Jorginho, Kieran Tierney, Raheem Sterling, and Neto are confirmed to depart. Partey, who turns 32 later this month, is reportedly holding out for terms that reflect his crucial role in the squad, as this may be his final major contract.

According to journalist Ryan Taylor, Arsenal made a “competitive” offer around ten days ago, but no agreement has been reached. Meanwhile, interest from top European clubs including Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and Juventus, alongside lucrative proposals from Saudi Arabia, have further complicated negotiations.

Despite the uncertainty, Partey ’s desire to remain in London for family reasons could yet play in Arsenal’s favour. X account @afcstuff reported that a two-year extension remains possible, should both parties reach a compromise.

Arteta has repeatedly praised Partey’s influence, particularly during the just concluded season, when the midfielder scored important goals against Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, and Manchester City. However, concerns about his injury history and advancing age may be prompting caution from Arsenal’s hierarchy, especially as the club closes in on a £51 million deal for Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi.

The potential arrival of Zubimendi, combined with Jorginho’s move to Flamengo, suggests that Arsenal are preparing for a midfield reshuffle, possibly at the expense of Partey.

Some fans believe Partey’s appearance on the release list may be a clerical error or an administrative formality reflecting the current lack of agreement. Others fear it signals the end of his five-year spell at the Emirates Stadium.
