Liverpool transfer priority after Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez debated before next Arne Slot…

Liverpool has already completed two transfers this summer. Jeremie Frimpong has arrived from Bayer Leverkusen, and Armin Pecsi has been snapped up from Hungarian side Puskas Akademia.

Next on the agenda is Florian Wirtz, with a bid worth $135 million (£100 million) plus a further $18 million (£13 million) in add-ons having been submitted. And Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez has been strongly linked with a transfer move to Anfield too after a stellar campaign on the south coast.

But with another 84 days left until the summer window closes (for good, rather than the few days it will shut from tomorrow), what else does Arne Slot need to sort out in terms of incomings? Some of our Liverpool writers have had their say.

Matt Addison - It all depends on Florian Wirtz

For me, there are two positions that Liverpool needs to strengthen assuming that Wirtz and Kerkez come in. But we don't actually know what the first of those is yet.

Let me explain what I mean by that. In my opinion, Liverpool needs another attacking player, but which profile depends entirely on how Wirtz is viewed.

I really like the idea of playing him as a false nine, in part to keep Dominik Szoboszlai in the team, and in part because there are no obvious number nine targets who seem to be realistically available on the market.

If Liverpool can't snap up one of the best strikers in the world, I'd use Wirtz in that role and bring in another midfielder instead. If it somehow can, then Wirtz becomes the midfield upgrade and you don't need one extra in that department.

Aside from that, on the assumption that there are no surprise exits, Liverpool should probably also be looking at another center-back. Dean Huijsen would have been ideal, and though Bournemouth will be desperate not to lose three-quarters of its defense in one summer, I really like Illia Zabarnyi.

James Findlater - No.9 next priority

Frimpong, Wirtz and Kerkez would represent outstanding business, although there is still one position that really needs addressing. For me, a new No.9 should absolutely be the priority — who Liverpool goes for is another question entirely, though.

In an absolutely ideal world where money is no issue and clubs happily let their players move without any fuss, I’d be going for Alexander Isak. Put simply, he is probably the best option out there.

Alas, I can’t see that happening at all, especially since Newcastle has Champions League football next season. With that in mind, I’ll go for someone where there at least seems to be some logic involved in a potential transfer.

It still feels like Julian Alvarez is a long shot, to say the least, but those rumors linking Darwin Nunez with Atletico Madrid at least offer up some kind of hope that a deal could be struck there. I’d be more than happy with the former Manchester City man up top, and what a team Arne Slot would have if he could get him in.

Michael Plant - Two more signings for the perfect window

I'm minded to agree with James on this one. A striker has to be the Reds' priority after securing deals for Wirtz and Kerkez.

There's a commonly held view that the options on the market aren't great when you step away from Isak, who is obviously the star name. But I don't necessarily share that opinion. Viktor Gyokeres and Victor Osimhen would add real quality to the team, and are increasingly looking like viable targets.

But given his age, Hugo Ekitike would be the ideal signing. The Frenchman would add pace too, something Liverpool has lacked up front. The sticking point could be his price, with Eintracht Frankfurt reportedly requesting a price of around €100M ($114M, £84M) for the player.

A natural sitting midfielder who can add physicality, the ability to retain and offer an alternative to Ryan Gravenberch wouldn't go amiss either. Liverpool's three worst performances this season came when it was bullied in midfield by Paris Saint Germain, Newcastle and Fulham, and bringing in another midfielder could help in that area.

Let's assume Wirtz arrives and Nunez leaves, the two areas this squad lacks are at holding midfield and up front. Add those to the signings to Frimpong, Wirtz and Kerkez and, my goodness, what a window that would be.
