Tottenham should consider giving Thomas Frank a welcoming gift should he arrive from Brentford as expected.
Tottenham are hoping to appoint Thomas Frank in the coming days, and they should be working now to gift him with a first summer signing. Spurs sacked Ange Postecoglou last week, and they need a new boss capable of achieving a much better Premier League campaign of next.
Money is going to have to be spent, whether the next boss is Frank or not, and last season is the obvious proof. Spurs were wrecked by injury having not procured enough depth in their squad, and one can certainly argue that there wasn’t enough quality, either.
With a Champions League campaign ahead, Tottenham are going to have to improve their squad significantly, and their first move should be to sign Lille’s Canadian striker Jonathan David. The forward is available on a free transfer this summer after he decided to let his contract run down.
The 25-year-old has scored a hugely impressive 87 goals in 178 league games for Lille, while he has also managed 34 goals in 62 games for Canada. The striker has shown elite ability and he is now ready to make the step up to a club ready to compete for trophies. The deal is likely to come with a big wage, but Spurs need competition for Dominic Solanke, and they can get high quality competition without spending a transfer fee. This is a deal they should already be working on.
David on his plans
David has been on Canada international duty this week, and during his time back home, he spoke to The Athletic about his future plans. He said: “I want a club with ambition that wants to do something. Obviously, I would love to fight for titles, to win titles. A team that’s competitive, that has ambition, really, with a good sporting project.
“I think anywhere you go, there’s always pressure to perform every week, there is the pressure to keep your spot, pressure from the supporters, because obviously you have to win every game. There is always pressure anywhere you go.”
Asked about links with Napoli, he confirmed he had not agreed anything with the club, and asked about Serie A, he replied: “When I watch Serie A compared to, say, the Premier League, the (latter) is just faster tempo, more up and down, faster. And Serie A can be like that, but it’s more tactical. It’s more like a chess game in a way.”
He added: “But I obviously want to get something done before pre-season starts so I can get settled and have that pre-season time with my team. “But apart from that…”
David won’t have pleased the Lille chiefs by letting his contract expire, with the French club missing out on tens of millions as a result, but he says: “Anywhere you go, you never want to leave on bad terms. But especially because I had five great years there, really enjoyed my time there, there was no reason to leave on a bad note, even if I’m leaving on a free (transfer). It’s exciting. I don’t know what the future is going to look like, but I think it’s exciting to just know that you’re going to have a new challenge.”
