Chelsea are pushing to get a deal done before Tuesday night’s early transfer deadline.
Chelsea have taken their goalkeeper chase down to the last day of the early transfer window. The Blues are now just days away from kicking off their FIFA Club World Cup campaign in the United States.
As part of that newly extended competition, there is an early transfer window that has been open for the last 10 days, closing on Tuesday night. Chelsea have already taken advantage of it, signing Liam Delap for £30million from Ipswich Town and convincing him to play in the Club World Cup over the Under-21s European Championships.
But there is one position Maresca is hell-bent on improving before the end of the early window on Tuesday night, and that’s the goalkeeper position. AC Milan stopper Mike Maignan is the chosen one, with the French goalkeeper likely available on an affordable deal due to the fact he is out of contract next summer.
Maignan has been offered a new contract by Milan but he is yet to put pen-to-paper, and it doesn’t look like he will. Chelsea are now pushing to get a deal done before the deadline so that they can book Maignan a flight to the States, where he will be eligible to play for the Blues, providing the deal is done by Tuesday night.
Fabrizio Romano has tweeted: “AC Milan and Chelsea are again in direct contact today for Mike Maignan to discuss terms of the deal. Maignan remains keen on joining Chelsea with player pushing for the deal to happen, but up to the clubs now. Negotiations still underway for Mike Maignan, club to club with Chelsea on it… one to the Deadline.”
Maignan on his approach
Speaking to GQ Italia magazine in the past, Maignan has detailed his approach and his style of goalkeeping. "My philosophy, also written on my gloves and boots, is 'foi discipline travail patiente et humilité'. It translates to: 'faith, discipline, work, patience, and humility.’ That's my daily mentality,” he said.
"I've worked very hard to be where I am today. So yes, in a way, I expected to reach these levels. And I believe in daily hard work, I have confidence in my work."
On his attitude and goalkeeping style, Maignan continued: “I'm a confident person and a hard worker, but at the same time, family is extremely important to me. I think there's a time for everything in life, and one must find the right balance to perform well and at the same time dedicate time to loved ones, because it's also for them that I do all this. I have a goal to achieve and I stay focused, it's the most important thing.
"I'm a modern goalkeeper, but to be a good goalkeeper, you need to know how to mix new and old school. Modernity and old game are the ingredients to achieve the best combination."
