Tomas Soucek’s West Ham future hangs in the balance, but his current focus is on the Czechia national team.

His international side are currently taking part in their World Cup qualifying games, in the hope of making it to the 2026 stage in North America.

It was a night to forget for Czechia, though, as they were on the wrong end of a 5-1 defeat against Croatia on Friday, with Soucek’s goal being the only positive.

Soucek’s contribution was poor

With Czechia being 1-0 down at half-time, it was Soucek who got his side back into the game when he scored a header in the 58th minute.

His side struggled to build any momentum from this, though, and went on to concede another four goals, two of which were penalties.

While it was Soucek who contributed to his side’s efforts and got his team level in the game, it seems as though that was the peak of his performance.

Czechia outlet iSport rated the midfielder’s performance as a three out of 10, stating that he had “problems” when it came to creating build-up in front of goal.

With the likes of Luca Modric playing for the opposition, the outlet also argued that he was being taught technical skills by the other side.

Meanwhile, Sports CZ were even harsher in their analysis.

The 30-year-old was given a rating of five, on a scale where that is the lowest score, arguing that his goal was “where the positives end.”

A lack of speed, confidence and composure was cited as the reason for his disappointing performance.

West Ham to move on from Soucek

There is no doubt that Soucek has been a consistent performer for West Ham across several seasons, and he deserves plenty of credit for his performances in that time.

2023/24 37 7

2022/23 36 2

Soucek has been a solid presence for West Ham.

However, the 30-year-old is clearly past his peak years now, which is being shown by less consistency in his performances both for the Hammers and on the international stage.

The pressure is on Graham Potter to get his transfer business right this summer, and offloading these types of players will only help him show that a period of change is underway.

With interest from the likes of Everton and Leeds United this summer, it may be best for all parties to move on.
