Flynn Downes and Cameron Archer must remain determined to thrive at Southampton as any Scottish stint has been downplayed by a huge transfer catch.
Transfer fees are the actual needle-movers in the transfer market, but their significance is often overshadowed on the outside. Instead, player preferences and a change of scenery are given the utmost importance which always has the potential to misfire during any rumoured deal.
Coming to Southampton, they are also suffering from this "transfer makes sense on-paper" syndrome. Take, for instance, wantaway striker Paul Onuachu whose former employers have shown relentless grit in availing of his services again but a string of unimpressive bids are acting as the stumbling blocks.
Similarly, another example is of Flynn Downes potentially packing his bags to meet Russell Martin less than six months after parting ways. Well, I know, Rangers won't play hardball back and forth like Trabzonspor but there is a plot twist that might have gone unnoticed among the Saints.
Rangers and Saints will struggle to find common transfer ground
Listing that catch, Football League World quoted fan pundit Martin Sanders saying: "But the American owners plan to invest £20 million in summer signings. Downes alone would cost them £20 million, for me, for Saints to sell him."
In all honesty, Rangers are massively reputed than any Championship side but the same story doesn't apply on the financial front. And given Southampton's firm stance on Mateus Fernandes even after receiving a double sized bid than their initial investment, it seems like underpricing players doesn't fall into the club's new transfer policy.
But Downes isn't the only one getting affected by this bold stance. Echoing these opinions on similar lines for Cameron Archer, Sanders added: "There was talk of Cameron Archer as well, but Saints signed Archer for £15 million so they could blow their whole transfer budget on one player."
Hence, it's high time the Southampton roster comes to terms with the fact that a Scottish adventure is only in store for their former gaffer, Russell Martin. As a result, the abovementioned duo needs to strive towards impressing Will Still and hopefully, make the playing eleven cut regularly.
