Terry Pluto on what Jim Schwartz meant with his Spider-Man quote about Myles Garrett

CLEVELAND, Ohio — When Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz dropped a Spider-Man reference about Myles Garrett last week, Cleveland fans’ spidey senses started tingling. But what exactly did he mean when he said “with great power comes great responsibility” about the Browns’ superstar?

The comment sparked debate during the Terry’s Talkin’ podcast. Is Schwartz demanding more leadership from the often-reserved Garrett? Or is this simply about unlocking an even more dominant version of the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year?

Cleveland.com columnist Terry Pluto says it isn’t about turning Garrett into a rah-rah leader—it’s about performance.

“I don’t think he means so much leadership,” Pluto said. “I mean, at this point, Myles’ personality is not going to change a whole lot. This is what you got, but that ... he thinks that Myles is set to have his best year.

“(Schwartz) said he thought Myles would respond with his best season ever with the contract and all that. He said, he went through a lot, he got the deal, he’s back. I’m not real worried about him. I know he’ll be in shape, he’ll be here when he needs to be here. And he was. I don’t think he was blowing smoke on that at all. I think that’s exactly what he thought.”

Pluto added that rather than asking Garrett to become something he’s not—a vocal leader like Donovan Mitchell with the Cavs — Schwartz is challenging him to be an even more exceptional version of who he already is.

“That’s exactly it,” Pluto said. “Get back to defense, right? Player of the Year, that kind of stuff.”

The proof will come on the field, but the foundation has been laid.
