Andy Mitten reveals what he’s hearing about Man Utd’s Viktor Gyokeres interest,‘I spoke to senior people…’

Manchester United’s chase for Viktor Gyokeres is dominating the headlines of late and respected fan/journalist Andy Mitten has now revealed the latest on the same.

The striker search at Man Utd needed to pivot after Liam Delap moved to Chelsea for his release clause, a deal United were hopeful of doing.

However, Delap’s rejection could age as a boost if United end up with Viktor Gyokeres instead, undoubtedly a better striker at this stage, which is what United need.

Fabrizio Romano said United made contact for Gyokeres in a developing situation and Andy Mitten, with his close ties to the club, has given his latest on the same.

Andy Mitten on Viktor Gyokeres and Man Utd

The appeal for Gyokeres and his fit at Old Trafford couldn’t be more natural, so this is a link that has been developing ever since Ruben Amorim became Man Utd manager.

Things were complicated when United failed to qualify for the Champions League via Europa League, hurting both their financial and competitive prospects.

It even seemed like Gyokeres wouldn’t join United at one stage but recent developments have made that deal look more and more likely.

However, Andy Mitten, speaking on TalkSport gave an unexpected update on Gyokeres which changes the picture altogether if it’s true.

He said: “I was at the club last week, spoke to senior people there and he [Gyokeres] wasn’t a name that I heard. That doesn’t mean it’s not gonna happen but I was told they are looking more at No. 10s than No. 9s.

“Fans want a No. 9 but I can only go off the evidence that I’ve got. The transfer market changes and if United were to get rid of eight players tomorrow, it would be completely different.

“The manager likes him and worked with him at Sporting but I’ve got no evidence that Man Utd are actively trying to sign him.”

Man Utd are unlikely to publicise Gyokeres interest

After months of developing stories from multiple sources, it seems extremely unlikely that United are not even looking at Gyokeres as an option.

What could be the case is that United laid out their immediate priority, which is to sign a No. 10, since signing another player probably needs some sales first.

Since United are sitting on a number of borderline unsellable players, there is no point publicising interest in Gyokeres through Mitten since he’s generally extremely reliable.

There are a lot of moving parts to the interest in Gyokeres which means the club is simply not in a position to confirm their interest in the Swedish striker.

At the same time, it would be a huge surprise if they’re not even considering him because there’s been far too much smoke on it for there to be no fire.
