Newcastle United have decided not to pursue Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The Magpies tracked the England international last season after pulling out of talks for the striker last July. But despite his availability this summer and interest from Calvert-Lewin to head north, the Magpies are looking elsewhere.

Everton announced yesterday that they remain in talks with the 28-year-old but there is a suggestion that he is considering other offers. Calvert-Lewin has spoken openly about his ambitions in the last few days and says he wants Champions League football - something the Magpies can offer.

Calvert-Lewin will be a free agent after June 30 and only personal terms would need to be agreed for potential suitors.. With Callum Wilson's future uncertain on Tyneside, the Magpies are certainly on the look out for a back-up star to Alexander Isak.

Everton confirmed that Calvert-Lewin had not given them a decision this morning and a statement read: "Everton can provide an update on players who are out of contract at the end of this month in line with the Premier League publication of clubs’ retained and released lists.

"The club is offering new contracts to Seamus Coleman and Idrissa Gana Gueye, while we continue to liaise with representatives of Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with the current deals of all four players expiring at the end of June."

Everton boss David Moyes had said on the striker last season: "Undoubtedly he's got qualities other strikers don't have, and he has to show us all when he gets the opportunities that he'll take it."

Newcastle may wait to assess their options and nothing can be ruled out if other deals don't materialise. But unlike 12 months ago, Calvert-Lewin is not on the initial wanted list.

The former Sheff United star was admired by Eddie Howe with Newcastle attempting to sign him last season before talks broke down with Everton. Those discussions crumbled because of demands at the Everton end as Yankuba Minteh was a big target of the Toffees.
