Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Chelsea move to sign AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan is now off with the Blues not willing to meet the asking price.
Enzo Maresca's side were pushing to bring in a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer window, despite having the likes of Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, and Djorde Petrovic at their disposal. After qualifying for the Champions League this season, the west London outfit will be looking for reinforcements to help them compete in Europe's elite club competition.
The Club World Cup is also just around the corner, with the mini transfer window closing on Tuesday. Clubs involved in the competition are potentially looking to complete last-minute deals in time for the tournament, but it appears that Chelsea won't be getting Maignan in time.
Fabrizio Romano: Maignan to Chelsea 'Off'
They won't pay Milan's asking price
Mike Maignan
Romano has now confirmed that a deal for Maignan to join Chelsea is now off, with the Blues not willing to meet Milan's asking price...
"Mike Maignan deal now OFF between Chelsea and AC Milan. Chelsea not willing to meet Milan price, deal not proceeding in time for Club World Cup as #CFC won’t pay “CWC tax”. #CFC mantain full trust in Petrović, Sánchez, Jorgensen + talent Mike Penders for GK role."
Maignan, described as 'world-class', only has one year remaining on his Milan contract, which could be a key reason why Chelsea don't want to pay over the odds. With the main transfer window opening on the 16th June, it will be interesting to see whether Chelsea make another play to secure his signature after the Club World Cup.
Mike Maignan 2024-25 Serie A statistics
Chelsea have plenty of goalkeepers in their squad, so it's certainly not a case of the position being a priority. Whether Maresca wants to upgrade remains to be seen, as there's a chance Maignan was simply seen as a market opportunity due to his contract expiring.
It turns out the French goalkeeper wasn't going to come cheap despite his deal ending next summer, and Milan are aiming to keep hold of him, at least for now.
