Chelsea transfer collapses hours before deadline as Blues' Club World Cup plans rocked

Chelsea's pursuit of AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan has reportedly collapsed just hours before tonight's deadline. Clubs up and down the country are scrambling to complete deals before the transfer window closes for a six-day period. Chelsea have already signed Liam Delap, Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr ahead of the upcoming Club World Cup.

They were also hoping to sign Maignan as their new first-choice goalkeeper, with Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen struggling at times last season. The west Londoners wanted to push a deal over the line before tonight's deadline so that Maignan could be included in their Club World Cup squad. However, a late twist has reportedly wrecked their hopes of securing his signature.

Chelsea have refused to meet AC Milan's asking price and will not sign Maignan before the Club World Cup, according to Fabrizio Romano. While the deal is said to have been called off, the Blues may decide to reignite their pursuit after the tournament.
