Liverpool set £25m transfer price tag as Aston Villa linked with 'top professional'

Joe Gomez

Once again, Aston Villa have been credited with an interest in Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, who could leave Anfield after ten years at the club this summer.

Centre half Gomez, who has racked up 240 games for the champions since joining from Championship outfit Charlton Athletic in 2015, missed the end of last season after suffering a serious injury in the shock 1-0 defeat to Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup. It was hoped he'd return before the end of the season but the efforts proved fruitless.

Gomez, an England international previously and capable of playing at centre half and at right-back, has been linked with Villa on a number of occasions in recent years, and fresh reports now consider that Villa Park may be a plausible destination once again for the 28-year-old, who'll have interest from a number of clubs if Liverpool decide to part with him.

The defender still has two years left on his contract with the Reds, having last extended his contract with the club in the summer of 2022 and owners FSG are after a fee in the region of £25m if any suitor wished to pursue a move. The likes of Everton and Newcastle United have also been credited with an interest.

Manager Arne Slot didn't have Gomez at his disposal as often as he'd have liked last season, in his first campaign in charge on Merseyside, but he was impressed by how the centre half presented himself on and off the pitch over the course of the Premier League winning season.

“Like you say, and that’s what you know and maybe the fans as well, but Joe Gomez is indeed one of the nicest people you can meet," Slot said earlier this season, "but he’s also inspiring his teammates when he’s not playing, so he has had more impact on our success than the outside world might probably know.

“This is what people told me when I came in. Joe is a top, top, top professional who no matter what position he is in always gives his best for the team and for himself as well."
