Ex-NFL QB has a blockbuster Patriots trade idea (and it's the worst one ever)

With OTAs coming to a close for the Patriots, Mike Vrabel will now have a clearer understanding of where the roster currently stands and what upgrades may still be needed. Because they still have an estimated $60 million remaining in cap space, there is plenty of money to be spent on whatever player(s) they might want to bring in, which could be via a blockbuster trade.

There are a handful of superstar players who have been rumored to be on the trade block over the last few months, one of whom is Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill. Since he was traded from the Chiefs to the AFC East team, he has consistently been a problem for the Patriots' defense, torching them far more often than being shut down.

However, that doesn't appear to be in the cards for the 2025 season, as the Dolphins have reportedly been contemplating trading Hill this summer, partly due to his expressed desire to play elsewhere after another disappointing season in Miami last year.

That has led some analysts to suggest where he might end up for the upcoming season, and for some reason, one wants to see him traded to New England.

The Patriots would be better off passing on this potential trade for Tyreek Hill

In an attempt to make some mid-offseason predictions, NFL.com asked several analysts trades they would like to see before the 2025 season begins.

The Patriots were mentioned a few times, with one of the more head-scratching instances being former NFL quarterback David Carr's desire to see the Dolphins trade Hill to the Patriots.

"The Dolphins might be wary of trading within the division, but if not, the Patriots and Drake Maye certainly could use Hill's services in the passing attack. New England has admirably overhauled the offense this offseason, and Hill would continue that trend by giving Josh McDaniels a guy who can elevate his attack to the next level due to his speed and field-stretching ability."

While he makes a good argument about how beneficial adding a player like Hill to the offensive lineup would be for a young quarterback, especially since the receiver is just one season out from recording 119 receptions for 1,799 yards and 13 touchdowns, Hill's history of problematic behavior is not something the Patriots need in their locker room.

Vrabel has made it clear that the new regime aims to assemble a young and hungry team of players who are committed to the team and its success. That mentality doesn't seem relevant for Hill, which might be an incorrect assumption. However, how he has conducted himself in recent years doesn't make him a desirable player to add to the roster, aside from his contributions on the field.

On top of that, there are still some who are concerned about Diggs and his fit with the team, especially after his recent controversy. Adding Hill to the mix would only generate even more concerns from analysts and fans, which could easily become a distraction.

Fortunately, the Patriots might be in a position this year that won't require them to add another prolific receiver like Hill because they have Diggs and the promising futures of players like rookie Kyle Williams and UDFA Efton Chism III. That could make it easy to pass on pulling off a trade for Hill, which the Dolphins could void anyway because they wouldn't want to trade him within the division.
