[Per NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill](https://x.com/nick_underhill/status/1932223735102083214), veteran running back Cam Akers is set to join New Orleans Saints during minicamps later this week for a tryout . This comes after it was announced that wide receiver Gabe Davis would be paying the team a visit. The Saints are clearly looking to add more talent on offense.
Multiple Achilles injuries have derailed Cam Akers' progress
------------------------------------------------------------
Akers was drafted back in the second round of the 2020 draft by the Los Angeles Rams. He had a stellar rookie season—the top 10 in rookie rushing yards—and hoped to build on top of that in his sophomore year.
Unfortunately, a tear to his right achilles tendon in training camp would end his season before it even began. Luckily, he would recover in time to return for the 2022 season and assist the Rams in becoming the champions of Super Bowl LVI.
Akers unfortunately quickly learned that the NFL is a business after he was traded to the Minnesota Vikings a year later. Unfortunately for the fans up north, Akers was unable to have a good start in Minnesota because he suffered another torn left Achilles just a few weeks after the trade. The Houston Texans signed him to begin the 2024 season, but they shipped him back to Minnesota that October.
Despite the injury history, Akers is a back that could potentially add some juice to the running back room. He has shown the ability to be electric when healthy, which is something that the Saints could definitely use more of, aside from Alvin Kamara. In his five-year career, he has carried the ball 502 times for 2,050 yards and 13 touchdowns.
But what's also valuable is the fact that Akers has a Super Bowl ring on his finger. He would bring another player with championship experinece to New Orleans. As the Saints try to craft a championship culture, adding players in addition to the coaches with Super Bowls to their name will help spread that culture.
