Chelsea were keen to sign French keeper this transfer window. But, they have now fallen short to do so. The deal is now off and the Blues will head to Club World Cup without their target.
The star in question here is Mike Maignan of AC Milan. The French keeper has been regular starter for both Milan and France national team. He has performed really well for Italian giants but is now keen to move away from them.
Maignan will be out of contract next summer. Milan were interested to extend his contract but Maignan has opted against it. As a result, the Serie A side are open to selling him as they are not ready to let him leave for free next summer.
Chelsea have been finding it hard to keep clean sheets. Hence, they were interested to bring in an experienced player this summer. The Blues were desperate to sign Maignan and were working hard to make the transfer happen.
Maignan was also keen to join the Blues and agreement was reached on personal terms. But, Fabrizio Romano has now reported that the deal is off. Chelsea are unwilling to meet the transfer fee demands of AC Milan.
The short transfer window will end tonight and hence Maignan is unlikely to become a new Chelsea player. It will be interesting to see if the Blues try again to sign Maignan after the end of Club World Cup. As of now, they will travel with current keepers.

Who will be Chelsea keeper in CWC?
Romano has added in his report that the Blues have full trust in Robert Sanchez, Petrovic and Jorgensen. In addition, he said that Mike Penders whom the Blues consider talent is also available for the goalkeeper role.
Sanchez has been regular started for the Blues under Enzo Maresca. Hence, the Italian can opt to stick with him in between the sticks. But, the Spaniard has not been able to stay consistent. Hence, his spot is not secure as regular starter.
On the other hand, Petrovic had a superb season on loan. Hence, he can be promoted directly as first choice keeper. This will provide him with a good chance to impress Maresca. If Petrovic plays well, the Blues may drop their interest in Maignan and stick with Petrovic for the next season.
