From big mistake to tactical shift: Liverpool midfielder faces transfer crossroads

Dominik Szoboszlai entered his second season at Liverpool with a clear lesson in mind. Reflecting on his debut campaign, the Hungarian midfielder showed maturity and self-awareness:

“Last year I spoke too much about titles and everything and of course we won one (trophy) and we had the chance to be up there until almost the very end,” he admitted.

“But we go game by game.”

That recalibrated mindset proved key in a season where Liverpool, under new head coach Arne Slot, clinched a record-equalling 20th league title.

Szoboszlai was integral to this triumph. Having endured periods of fatigue in his first season, the 24-year-old embraced a more clearly defined role this term.

Slot’s tactical switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation placed Szoboszlai in direct competition with Harvey Elliott for the number 10 position—one he secured early on with a standout assist in the opening fixture at Ipswich Town.

Szoboszlai: creator, closer, worn, reborn

His attacking output improved noticeably, with a total of eight goals and nine assists. He underlined his creative value in key moments—registering assists in high-profile wins, including a 3-0 dismantling of Manchester United and a goal in the 3-1 Champions League victory at AC Milan.

He finished the campaign strongly, contributing four goal involvements in the final five league matches. There were dips too, as the energy demanded by his pressing duties at times left him looking worn, particularly during the Fulham defeat.

Yet Szoboszlai showed adaptability when redeployed in deeper or more fluid roles. He shone as a false nine in a 2-0 win at Manchester City. And later dropped into a deeper role at Brighton.

With the anticipated arrival of Florian Wirtz potentially reshaping Liverpool’s midfield hierarchy, Szoboszlai’s versatility across central positions may be his most valuable asset going forward.
