Back in 2023, Tottenham Hotspur made a serious approach to hire Arne Slot as their full-time manager. That was after parting ways with Antonio Conte. At the time, Slot was leading Feyenoord. He was seen as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches.
Though Spurs were hopeful of bringing the Dutchman to North London. But, he politely declined the offer. He decided to continue his journey with Feyenoord then, instead of jumping to the Premier League. Finishing in the top two of the Eredivisie will get the club into the UCL in the 2023-24 season. That was the part of the appeal. He wasn’t going to pass that up either.
Many now wonder if Spurs would still be manager-hunting had the Dutch coach accepted the role then. That is especially after given how smoothly he has now settled into life at Liverpool.
Family and Timing Played a Big Role in Slot’s Decision
The UCL was one part of the decision. But, Slot later revealed that family matters played a huge role in his call to stay. The timing wasn’t right, and moving countries was something he wanted to weigh carefully with his loved ones.
Now, Spurs begin the hunt again following the recent exit of Ange Postecoglou. They have set their sights on Brentford boss Thomas Frank. Talks are reportedly in the final stages, with the Danish manager having a £13.5 million release clause.
Tottenham are eager to wrap up the deal quickly. But, it’s hard to ignore what could’ve been if Slot had taken charge a year earlier.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are preparing for the future under his leadership. And Tottenham are once again back at square one, searching for stability.
