Thomas Frank warned he is taking a step down by swapping Brentford for Tottenham

Martin Keown has now stated that Thomas Frank will be stepping down by leaving Brentford for Tottenham this summer.

Ange Postecoglou has since been sacked as Tottenham Hotspur manager after just two seasons at the helm, with the club looking to appoint a new manager in the coming days.

Thomas Frank of Brentford has since emerged as Tottenham’s preferred choice, after holding several meetings with the club chairman, Daniel Levy.

The Brentford boss would be heading into the Spurs dugout to make them competitive in the Premier League, after Postecoglou’s poor domestic campaign last season, one that saw Tottenham finish in 17th place – their worst ever league finish in history.

Martin Keown questions Thomas Frank’s move to Tottenham

But Arsenal man Martin Keown does not believe that it is the right move for Frank, with the former defender labelling the switch a step down from Brentford.

Of course, with Spurs finishing so far down the table last season, only three clubs were worse than the Lilywhites, while sixteen others fared better.

Frank’s Brentford were one of those sixteen sides, as the Dane led them to a tenth-place finish last campaign, leaving them ten positions higher than Tottenham.

Speaking on talkSport, Keown was quick to point out the drop down. He said: “This fella is dropping down by going to Spurs – they are tenth in the table Brentford, with a much smaller budget.”

Why Frank would be stepping up with Spurs

Indeed, it is very naive to label Frank’s move from Brentford to Tottenham a dropdown, especially when you consider the history of the two clubs.

Tottenham have constantly competed in the Premier League and are European champions, which would now afford Frank the chance to manage in the Champions League – a clear step up in his managerial career.

The Dane is also set to have a much bigger budget to work with, and given his track record, he should be able to keep Spurs competitive, given how well he has done with a shoestring budget at Brentford.

In fact, it was also revealed that Thomas Frank has long had an eye on the Spurs job, with a member of the Dane’s backroom staff revealing that he often joked about taking charge of Tottenham.
