Manchester City will reportedly sign 33-year-old English goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli from Chelsea in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by The Athletic, Marcus Bettinelli is the subject of interest from Manchester City. The Citizens have been scouring the market for a goalkeeper heading into the summer transfer window after parting ways with Scott Carson. So, the Chelsea stopper has emerged as a target for the Premier League giants.
Marcus Bettinelli and his Chelsea career
Marcus Bettinelli has been a backup player for Chelsea since completing a Bosman move in July 2021 after spending over a decade and a half with Fulham. A native of London, the Englishman spent his formative years in his home city, joining the youth division at Fulham in 2006 and rising through the ranks at the West London club.
The 33-year-old enjoyed a fruitful career with Fulham but has managed only one appearance for Chelsea in the last four years. However, the experienced goalkeeper has had over 250 outings in his career thus far, turning out for Fulham, Chelsea, and Middlesbrough, among others.
Meanwhile, Bettinelli’s spell with Chelsea will likely end in the summer transfer window, even though he has one more year left on his contract with the West London club. The experienced English goalkeeper’s next destination will be Manchester City, with the Citizens on the cusp of securing his services.
Move across the Premier League on the cards
Manchester City’s interest in Marcus Bettinelli is understandable. While Pep Guardiola already has Ederson Moraes and Stefan Ortega in his squad, the Citizens have parted ways with Scott Carson this week. Even though the veteran English goalkeeper made only two appearances for Manchester City, the Premier League giants need to replace him and find a new third-choice goalkeeper.
So, Bettinelli has emerged as a viable target for Manchester City, with the 33-year-old English shot-stopper having the quality to make a few more appearances for City than he did for Chelsea. Meanwhile, the Citizens are in a spot of bother over Ederson’s long-term future.
The Brazilian international is a target for Saudi Pro League clubs, and a summer departure may be on the cards. So, Manchester City may also need a new first-choice goalkeeper in the 2025/26 season. As for Bettinelli, the Englishman is set for a new adventure after spending four years with Chelsea.
