Liverpool confirms final pre-season fixture with Anfield double-header booked in for Arne Slot

Liverpool will face Athletic Club in an Anfield double-header on Monday, August 4, five or six days before taking on Crystal Palace in the Community Shield and around two weeks before kicking off the new Premier League season.

Arne Slot's side will begin pre-season in the second week of July, facing Preston North End at Deepdale on the 13th. The Reds will then travel to Asia to take on AC Milan in Hong Kong (July 26) and then Yokohama Marinos in Japan (July 30).

The games against Athletic Club will kick off at 5pm and 8pm UK time (12pm and 3pm ET) and fans will need to buy one ticket to watch both matches. It is likely that there will be entirely different players involved in each set of 90 minutes.

Athletic Club finished fourth in Spain last season behind Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. It also reached the semi-finals of the Europa League, where it was eliminated by Manchester United.

Liverpool has played Athletic Club twice in recent seasons, facing the Spanish outfit in 2017 and 2021 in pre-season. The sides first played each other competitively in 1968.

Slot's men played in a double-header last season, hammering Sevilla 4-1 with Trey Nyoni impressing, and then drawing 0-0 with Las Palmas.

By the time Liverpool faces Athletic Club, its roster could look quite different. It is continuing talks with Bayer Leverkusen at the moment for Florian Wirtz, while Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez is also a target.

Harvey Elliott, meanwhile, has made it clear that he wants to play more regularly next time around. He might have to make a transfer move elsewhere, as a result.

"It's just a situation that me and the team have to have a conversation about because I'm coming into an age now where I'm 22, I'm going to be 23 next season," Elliott said, via BBC Sport, when asked if he is considering leaving Liverpool.

"I don't really want to be wasting years on my career because it's a short career. You don't know what's going to happen.

"I need to reflect. I need to see if I'm content in doing what I'm doing and how can I improve as a player because that's the most important thing.

"I just want to improve and be the best possible version of myself. If that's to go somewhere else, then it's a decision that I'm going to have to make and I just need to see what happens.

"Nothing makes me want to leave. I love the club, I love the fans, the team. I support them as well. But most importantly, it's just about what's best for my career."

With the Reds not involved in the Club World Cup, Slot and his players will have a full summer to prepare on the training field ahead of attempting to retain their Premier League crown. The league fixtures will be released a week on Wednesday, on June 18.
