'I'm not sure': Journalist shares how Liverpool are really feeling about Luis Diaz's contract situation now

Luis Diaz’s future feels as if it’s going to be a saga that will drag on until the final moments of the summer transfer window.

On the face of things, it seems evident that Liverpool do not want to sell the attacker due to his importance to their first-team squad.

But, seeing as though Diaz’s contract is set to expire in the next couple of years, a decision will have to be made soon, otherwise they could lose the Colombia international on a free transfer.

Liverpool have already rebuffed a move from Barcelona, but every player has a price; it just depends on whether teams are willing to meet it.

Ian Doyle doesn’t think Liverpool are ‘massively keen’ on offering Luis Diaz a new deal

As mentioned, Diaz was one of the Anfield outfit’s best attackers last season, with Mohamed Salah the only one better than him in terms of goals and assists.

The attacker played as a striker for most of the campaign but was afforded the odd chance here and there to play in his preferred position of left wing.

Diaz has always dreamt of playing for Barcelona, and, while speaking on the Liverpool ECHO’s Blood Red Podcast, journalist Ian Doyle gave his verdict on where Diaz’s future lies.

“So, yeah, I mean, and Diaz as well, I’m not sure whether they are massively keen to give him a new contract. I don’t know,” he said.

“Yeah, they’re not pushing to do it. Not that they won’t do it, but he’s got two years left, and because he’s 28, it looks like, well, we’ll just see how things go.

“Whether that involves Saudi Arabia coming in with a bid for £85 billion, then you go, hmm.”

Liverpool should sell Luis Diaz if they don’t want to offer him a new contract

Seeing as though Diaz still has two years left on his deal with Liverpool, the Colombia international still has a decent chunk of value to his name.

Recent reports have rated Diaz at around £72million, which seems like a solid deal, especially considering that he’s now 28 years old.

If Liverpool do want to keep the attacker around for the next couple of seasons, they should at least extend his stay by a further year so that he will still have some value when they eventually want to get rid of him.

Arne Slot has already been through a free agent saga with Trent Alexander-Arnold this season, and after the way fans reacted about the right-back leaving, it feels silly for Liverpool to allow another one of their star men to leave for nothing.

At the end of the day, it’s anyone’s guess what the Reds’ squad could look like as the 2025-26 season gets underway, but in the grand scheme of things, selling Diaz while his value is as high as it is seems like the best option.
