As the league made its way through the voluntary portion of OTAs, every absence was met with a statement about the program being voluntary, so there wasn’t really a need to worry about who wasn’t there. However, with the arrival of mandatory minicamp, absences now matter, and players are using those absences to make statements.
On Tuesday, star players across the NFL didn’t report to minicamp as they seek new contracts. The Steelers are also dealing with this, as star defender T.J. Watt decided not to show up. While that’s a situation Pittsburgh will have to get resolved, there’s another minicamp no-show that should have the team’s attention: Jonnu Smith and the Miami Dolphins.
The veteran tight end didn’t report for minicamp in Miami, and he has made it very clear he wants a new deal after coming off a career year in 2024. It has also been made clear that the Steelers are interested in trading for Smith. With the Pro Bowl tight end digging his heels in on his stance for a new contract, Pittsburgh must decide if they really want to go get him.
The Pittsburgh Steelers must decide if they really want to trade for Jonnu Smith
The Dolphins are open to moving the veteran tight end, but they aren’t just going to give him away for nothing. With Smith under contract for another year, the Steelers will have to send a trade package that Miami deems suitable.
Additionally, Pittsburgh must be prepared to immediately pay Smith. Considering his desire to stay with the Dolphins, it’s no guarantee he will show up for the Steelers and just forget about his desire for a new contract.
It’ll ultimately be up to Pittsburgh to decide if the necessary trade package and contract is too much. The Steelers already have a lot going on in their building, but with Aaron Rodgers under center for one season, the franchise will likely be committed to building the best team.
