Arsenal pursuit for a top-class center forward has now turned to Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, with Gyokeres has emerged as one of Europe’s more sought-after strikers. The Swedish international had a wonderful first year in Portugal and has drawn suitors, including Arsenal. Mikel Arteta is looking to broaden his attacking options, making Gyokeres a viable option, but nothing is ever easy.
Gyokeres and His Rise to Prominence
Viktor Gyokeres and his Arsenal pursuit story is an interesting story. moved to Sporting CP from Coventry City in July 2023, transferring for a fee just over €20 million. Gyokeres has translated his success from Coventry City’s serious promotion push and has absolutely smashed the transcript in the Primeira Liga, scoring an astonishing 29 goals and 10 assists in 33 league matches. The Swedish striker is an interesting physical specimen and is ruthless around goal and can hold up the play and link up so well. The reason why Arsenal pursuit for him is because he fits the system perfectly.
Gyokeres has been on the radar of clubs beyond England, with reported interest from Chelsea and Paris Saint Germain. However, Arsenal have been the more consistently linked club out of a number of teams, as Arteta searches for a long-term solution to improve his sides scoring.
Gyokeres: Arsenal’s Interest and the Financial Hurdles
Sources indicate that Arsenal have internally discussed a possible Gyokeres transfer, however, the Sporting €100 million (£85 million) release clause is a sticking point. The Gunners do not want to pay that amount outright and may wish to negotiate a deal. However, Sporting president Frederico Varandas has stood his ground on the clause especially after having sold defender Goncalo Inacio to Liverpool earlier in the window.
Arsenal’s budget cannot stay in ignorance. Their cash outlay from last summer on Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, and Jurrien Timber was significant, and the restrictions of Financial Fair Play (FFP) means they will have to be mindful before committing themselves to a transfer. The planned transfer has the makings of a structured payment, or possibly some form of player swap set-up to pull off.
Alternative Striker Options
If Arsenal cannot land Gyokeres, they have got other targets lined up. Benjamin Sesko was a priority. However, he has signed a new deal at RB Leipzig. Therefore, putting an end to speculation surrounding his immediate future. Napoli’s Victor Osimhen is another option, but his €120 million valuation makes him a more expensive option. Gyokeres is Arsenal’s preferred option because of his (26) age, athletic profile as a player, and goal scoring pedigree. He fits the Premier League mold of player. Moreover, his skill set can combine with that of someone else to form an impressive partnership
Although the transfer window is now open for the summer, Arsenal has an important decision to make. That is to push on with an official bid or opt for a cheaper alternative. Sporting sat on their position. No sale below the release clause unless something is allowing that is outside of a normal transfer structure. Any serious club will try to sway Sporting to consider other options but it is clear that Sporting need value. Therefore, only time will tell. Arsenal is going to need to act and act quickly on Gyokeres before Chelsea or other suitors enter the fray with formal offers.
Last Piece of The Puzzle
There is a possibility of Sporting getting a player back as part of the deal. But Sporting are setting on cash. Viktor Gyokeres is a world-class striker who will add so much value to Arsenal’s attacking units. However, the valuations make this transfer very challenging. Unless Arsenal can break their transfer record again and come to terms with an agreement, the deal seems in vain. Expensive summer ahead for Arsenal. We will find out soon as fans await the club’s decision in the next couple of weeks.
At this point, Gyokeres is still with Sporting CP, but the status could change quickly as the transfer window develops. Arsenal’s next decision will be key to whether they take their man or move to other targets.
