Arsenal have FA Cup winning captain high on their transfer list

**Arsenal have Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi high on their transfer list if they are to target a move for a defender this summer, according to** [**the Athletic**](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6413081/2025/06/10/arsenal-transfer-latest-news-manchester-united-liverpool-chelsea-barcelona-real-madrid/)**.**

The Gunners are long-term admirers of the England international and have reignited their interest ahead of a potential move this year. Mikel Arteta would like to bring a centre back to the club and after initial target Dean Huijsen signed for Real Madrid, Guehi now finds himself a possible priority if Arsenal do explore the defender market. They will fancy themselves to get a cheap deal due to him having just one year left on his contract.

Guehi is a solid defender, but with William Saliba and Gabriel cemented as the Gunners' first choice centre back pairing, he wouldn't walk straight into the team so would have to compete for his place. That could complicate things if a deal is explored.

Guehi has evolved into one of the Premier League's most underrated defenders in recent years and has helped Crystal Palace go from being relegation prospects and frequent mid-table dwellers to a troublesome Europe hunting team.

He captained the Eagles to their first ever major trophy as they lifted the FA Cup this season following a 1-0 win over Manchester City in the final. The defender was made club captain ahead of the 2024/25 season following on from a string of impressive performances for England. Guehi came into the Three Lions' defence in place of Harry Maguire and helped lead them to a second successive Euro final, but lost 2-1 to Spain at the final hurdle.

His form over recent seasons has seen him become of interest to top teams such as Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle and it seems the Gunners are looking at him once again this summer.

There may be an issue in any potential talks however with Guehi potentially not prepared to join the north Londoners. With Saliba and Gabriel firmly solidified as Arteta's preferred centre back duo, he would have to compete with two of the world's best to knuckle down a place in the team.

This won't be particularly appealing to Guehi, especially with the World Cup coming at the end of the season. He will be wanting to play week in, week out in order to prove his ability and consistency to England manager [Thomas Tuchel](https://paininthearsenal.com/thomas-tuchel-offers-interesting-arsenal-title-prediction-ahead-of-club-world-cup) and get back into the Three Lions squad.

With just a year to go until his current contract expires, Arsenal face the prospect of a potentially cheap deal for one of the nation's best defenders and while he would be a great addition to the squad, he may be an unattainable one.

Guehi is too good to be a benchwarmer, but arguably isn't good enough to take the place of either Saliba or Gabriel. It would be incredibly hard to convince him to move so the Gunners may be better off targeting a younger less experienced centre back that would better suit the role of a backup.
