Rangers are considering a sensational move to sign Christian Eriksen on a free transfer ahead of his imminent departure from Man United.

That is according to former Man United chief scout and Sir Alex Ferguson number two Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the 33-year-old could make the move to Glasgow.

Russell Martin’s side are exploring the transfer market to add quality to their squad shortly after his appointment, and could take a gamble on the midfielder.

Brown told Football Insider in October that Eriksen would leave Man United at the end of the season and preparations had begun to sign his replacement.

There are concerns that he may not have the legs to perform at the top level, but if Rangers can bring energy in around him it would allow him to play an orchestrating role.

His wages are also believed to be an issue, but if a compromise can be found and the club are willing to take a risk, it is a deal they have considered.

Rangers plot move to sign Christian Eriksen after Ajax links

Brown told Football Insider on 3 April that Eriksen could go back to Ajax after leaving Old Trafford amid speculation linking him with a return to the Netherlands.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, has insisted Martin’s side will explore the free agent market to bolster their ranks.

“Rangers have to be clever in the transfer market,” he told Football Insider.

“They have to assess where they can get players who will lift the quality in the squad and help to close the gap to Celtic, but won’t cost too much money.

“From what I hear, they will look to explore the free agent market because there’s some quality there.

“They’re considering whether to take a chance on somebody like Christian Eriksen.

“He’s into his 30s now, he’s not going to get box to box, but he can pass and manipulate the ball in ways that their current crop of players can’t do.

“After leaving Man United, he’ll be looking for a new club and Rangers is an interesting opportunity.

“He could become an orchestrator in the middle of the park, if they can get runners around him and let him focus on what he can do in possession.

“On the other side of it, they have to consider he’ll probably be on high wages and might not have the legs any more if that’s what they want.

“But it’s move they’re looking at and one they might decide is worth the risk and worth the gamble.”

Mohamed Diomande update emerges at Ibrox

Alongside their plans to bolster Martin’s squad in the summer transfer window, the Ibrox club are also aiming to deter interest in their key players.

Brown told Football Insider on 10 June that Martin plans to keep Mohamed Diomande as a star player in his starting XI despite interest from Premier League sides.

Everton are among the clubs eyeing a potential summer deal, but the manager with the backing of the new owners have no intention of letting him go.

This comes after Football Insider revealed on 6 June that Rangers will reject offers for Diomande as the new boss is planning to build his squad around him.
