Jaguars free agent bust's quest for a new home continues with NFC bottom-feeder

The Jacksonville Jaguars released Gabe Davis after the NFL Draft. He's been looking for a new team since then but hasn't had much luck. In his quest for a new home, he's now meeting with one of the worst teams in the NFC.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that Davis was on his way to visiting the New Orleans Saints. Just recently, Davis had a meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers but left without a deal. In fact, Rapoport cited injury concerns as the reason.

One thing working in Davis' favor is that the Jaguars are paying him a guaranteed $11.5 million in 2025, so the team that ends up signing him would only have to offer him the NFL veteran's minimum. That most definitely makes him an appealing fit for the Saints, who are dealing with cap constraints. On top of that, they are in need of help at receiver. Chris Olave is still at the top of the depth chart, but aside from him and Brandon Cooks, New Orleans doesn't have many appealing options at the position.

When you add it all up, the Saints make sense for Davis. On the other hand, he would be landing in a not-so-great situation. Quarterback Derek Carr just retired earlier this year. This left a void behind center that New Orleans is trying to fill with Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, and Jake Haener.

While Shough was an early-round pick in this year's draft, he's far from a proven commodity in the pros. Couple that with the fact that only the New York Giants have lost more games in the NFC in recent years, and the Saints wouldn't be a great spot for Davis to rebuild his stock. Nevertheless, they currently seem like his only choice.

The Jaguars made the right call when they released Gabe Davis

All things considered, the Jacksonville Jaguars made the right decision when they released Gabe Davis. Leaving aside that they had signed Dyami Brown and later drafted Travis Hunter, the team's brass knew firsthand that Davis was still recovering from a meniscus injury he suffered late in his stint with the Buffalo Bills.

Heck, you could even make the case that the former regime missed the mark when they signed the former UCF Knight. After all, the Jags knew that he was coming off an injury but still gave him a three-year deal worth $39 million. To nobody's surprise, he was underwhelming throughout his lone season in Duval.

Without better alternatives, Jacksonville cut its losses and released him. The silver lining is that the team's brass was able to use the post-June designation and spread the dead money to 2026.

For the time being, Davis will continue his quest for a new home, but the fact that the Jaguars didn't hesitate to eat so much dead money should be a warning sign for teams who're considering taking a flyer on him.
