Newcastle United made the correct transfer decision two years ago.
Newcastle were quoted £30million for Tierney in the summer of 2023 but instead pursued a deal for Lewis Hall. Hall joined on an initial season-long loan from Chelsea before the move turned permanent for an initial £28million last summer.
After a difficult start to his St James’ Park career, the 20-year-old emerged as one of United’s top performers last season before his season was cut short in March due to foot surgery. He is due to return in time for pre-season.
Meanwhile, Tierney spent the 2023-24 campaign on loan at La Liga side Real Sociedad before staying at the Emirates last term, where he made 20 appearances, only four of which were starts.
Kieran Tierney re-joins Celtic two years after Newcastle United interest
It is a transfer decision Newcastle United got spot on with Tierney officially re-joining Celtic on a five-year contract. The 28-year-old made 170 appearances for the Hoops before moving to Arsenal for £25m.
“Everybody’s known for a few months and just to be here with the Celtic strip on again just feels amazing,” Tierney said. “I spoke with the manager, and obviously I had worked with him before and I’ve always kept in touch with him. He’s one of the best so I’m so lucky and grateful that he’s given me the chance to come back again.

“When you move away from home, you grow up, you learn different things. I was in Spain for a year, learning a different language and playing in a different league, so I’m definitely a different person.
“Player-wise, it’s the same as I always say – I’ll try and work my hardest, I’ll do my best for the club and that’s all I can do. My ambition is just for Celtic to be as successful as possible, retain our place at the top and continue to win trophies and do well for Celtic.”
Lewis Hall reflects on injury blow
Hall was set to be named in Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad and start Newcastle’s Carabao Cup final against Liverpool before discovering his injury required surgery.
Reflecting on the timing, the Slough-born defender said: "I feel like my season's gone well and it's come at probably the worst time. I would want to continue playing but we had to look at my career and agree on what was best. If I was to play through the pain, things could have got worse which would have a negative impact on my career long-term.
"Honestly, I would play through anything if I could. Obviously the cup final is a massive game; I'd played in all the games leading up to it and I'd like to think I've played a big part in us getting to this stage.
"I'm a firm believer that I've got so much more that I want to achieve now. I've had a really good start to my Newcastle career; I've come a long way in this team and I feel like there's so much more that we can achieve together.
"I can't wait to be getting fit during the off-season and getting ready for next season - hopefully in the Champions League with a trophy by then."
