Exclusive: Tom Cairney's preference made clear as he weighs up contract offers from Fulham and…

Tom Cairney looked like Wrexham’s no.1 transfer target at one point. But the link has since gone cold, and for good reason.

Tom Cairney is about as experienced as they come in the Championship: he boasts 318 second tier appearances in his career so far, and an impressive three promotions to the Premier League as well.

It’s no surprise then that Wrexham want to sign Cairney this summer. Although it was surprising to hear the rumours that Wrexham have offered Cairney a £50,000-a-week contract to join this summer, after his contract at Fulham came to an end.

Recent reports though revealed how Fulham have offered Cairney a new contract to stay with the club beyond this summer and that he was weighing up his options. Cairney has been with Fulham since joining from Blackburn Rovers back in 2015.

Wrexham transfer target Tom Cairney is eager to stay with Fulham

We can now provide some clarity on the whole situation. Wrexham Insider’s chief transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey has informed us that Cairney ‘ideally wants to stay with Fulham’ and stay in the Premier League beyond this season.

However, Phil Parkinson and Wrexham are ‘still monitoring’ the situation, not giving up hope of a potential deal for the 34-year-old. Though Wrexham Insider understands that Cairney’s current preference is to stay at Craven Cottage and that a potential signing was always an ambitious one. Cairney staying at Fulham could be a formality now, or it could be delayed by the finer details.

Wrexham have several midfield targets this summer though, and expect the Dragons to quickly focus on other deals amid this Cairney stand-off, with more and more names likely to be added to their wishlist in the coming weeks and months.

The latest on Wrexham’s search for a new midfielder

A new midfielder on the Dragons’ radar is Lewis Travis at Blackburn Rovers. Recent reports state that Wrexham are interested in signing Travis this summer, though Christian Eriksen is the big name doing the rounds right now.

Whether or not it’s realistic or not, it’s claimed that Wrexham are weighing up a move for Eriksen who’s just been released by Man United, in what could arguably be the biggest statement signing of the Championship this summer.

Though Wrexham don’t appear to be close to any midfield signings, nor to any signings at all. It’s all gone a bit quiet on the Wrexham transfer front, though there’s still the bulk of the summer transfer window left for Parkinson to do some business.
