Viktor Gyokeres is a man in demand but the Man Utd target is said to be unhappy at how he is being treated by Sporting Lisbon.

IManchester United are stepping up their interest in Viktor Gyokeres with Ruben Amorim keen to be reunited with his former Sporting Lisbon talisman.

The 27-year old striker has enjoyed another prolific season in Portugal this season with 39 goals in 33 league games with United finally making an approach for Gyokeres after months of flirting.

The Red Devils need to make a fast start in the transfer window to give Amorim as much time as possible on the training ground in pre-season and to help with a fast start when the league campaign kicks-off. With no European football, there is no excuse not to be significantly higher up the table.

Viktor Gyokeres unhappy as Sporting Lisbon go back on their word over transfer exit

According to Portuguese outlet Record though, Gyokeres isn’t happy. Gyökeres is in fact "furious", as the club are “not respecting the gentlemen's agreement that existed for his sale.”

It continued: “As our newspaper reported, after a stunning debut year at Alvalade, Gyökeres remained at Sporting in 2024/25 after being promised that he would have more favourable conditions to leave the club this summer. In other words, he was assured that his release clause, worth 100 million euros (£84m), would not be an obstacle and that he could leave if Sporting received a specific offer of 60 million euros (£50m), plus 10 million euros (£8.4m) dependent on objectives.

“The decision to abandon the green and whites was made a long time ago and, as we wrote on May 27, the desire to turn the page has not faded even after a great season crowned with the double, through winning the championship and the Portuguese Cup, and all the (recurrent) expressions of support that have been received from Sporting fans.”

Is Gyokeres out of order for demanding to move?

Players have never had more power but it is understandable why Gyokeres is annoyed.

With 97 goals and 28 assists in 102 games, there is nothing more that the big Swede could have done for Sporting over the last couple of seasons. He has earned his move, wherever that may be, even if a verbal contract isn’t worth the metaphorical paper it is written on.

If Gyokeres had the chance to leave Sporting last summer but gave a commitment to the club then it is only fair that he expects a similar level of respect.

The alternative now is that they hold a player hostage who has become disillusioned and feels let down. It would have been different if Gyokeres was stamping his feet about not being allowed to leave at the first offer and it looks like the beginning of the end of his adventure in Portugal.
