It's all hands on deck for the Washington Commanders as they go in search of another deep postseason run in 2025. Optimism is higher than it's been in decades, but everyone must meet or exceed expectations with a bigger target on their back.
One potential breakout star is gaining significant momentum as preparations for the upcoming campaign gather pace.
Quan Martin is the top dog in Washington's safety room after Adam Peters let Jeremy Chinn walk for the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency. That brings a different type of pressure, so it'll be interesting to see how the former second-round pick fares with increased responsibilities on his shoulders.
Martin performed extremely well last season, especially considering he was dealing with two separated shoulders. That speaks volumes to his commitment and fierce inner desire to be the best. If the same trend continues, superstardom might not be too far behind.
Quan Martin tipped to cement breakout status at Commanders' minicamp
Jacob Infante from Pro Football Network fueled the hype around Martin, listing him as Washington's candidate to thrive over their mandatory minicamp. The analyst added that an improved offense could help showcase his coverage prowess more effectively when competitive action begins again.
"After serving as a rotational defender in 2023, Quan Martin stepped into the Washington Commanders’ starting lineup in 2024. After spending most of his rookie year in the slot, he looked comfortable as a deep safety. The Commanders’ stellar offense means opponents could be playing from behind often. The more opposing teams pass the ball down late, the more opportunities Martin will have to cement himself as a breakout talent."

The Commanders are relying heavily on Martin this time around. Will Harris should be a decent starter, albeit with less explosiveness than Chinn brought to the table. Tyler Owens and All-Pro special teamer Jeremy Reaves could also be more involved, but the onus is firmly on the Illinois graduate to make the improvements needed to become one of the league's best.
Joe Whitt Jr. holds a similar opinion. The defensive coordinator is holding Martin to a higher standard these days. It's a supreme vote of confidence in his capabilities, but this counts for nothing if it cannot be repaid in full.
All signs point to Martin becoming an integral part of Washington's long-term strategy. Momentum is firmly on the player's side, which should provide the confidence needed to become more influential during practice and when the regular season arrives.
Ron Rivera's grave draft errors were vast. But his decision to pick Martin might be his best work if the player reaches a new level in 2025.
