“Allen Looked A Step Slow”: Pittsburgh Steelers Urged To Sign Keenan Allen Despite Signs Of…

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a one-year deal. With Rodgers coming in for one season with the Steelers, they will look to get back to the postseason and win a playoff game or two.

The Steelers receiving core outside of D.K. Metcalf is not great. They traded away George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys for a third-round pick in 2026. Pittsburgh could either sign another wide receiver or make a trade for one before the start of the 2025 NFL season. One player who is still a free agent is wide receiver Keenan Allen.

Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell (46) tackles Chicago Bears wide receiver Keenan Allen (13) during the second half at Soldier Field in Chicago, Ill. on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2024.

Metcalf, Robert Woods, and Calvin Austin III for now are projected to be the starting wide receivers for Pittsburgh. Pat Freiermuth is the starting tight end for the Steelers. However, with Rodgers being signed, Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports listed five potential wide receiver candidates that Pittsburgh should either trade for or sign before the start of the 2025 NFL season.

Benjamin thinks that they should sign Allen before the start of the 2025 NFL season. He said,

“Age is not necessarily on Allen’s side anymore; the longtime Los Angeles Chargers star is 33 and hasn’t played a full NFL season in more than a half-decade. That shouldn’t necessarily hold the Steelers up from courting him as an unsigned free agent, given their commitment to a 41-year-old Rodgers. Yes, Allen looked a step slow in his lone season with the Chicago Bears to start 2024, but he was a favorite target of Caleb Williams later on, and his expertise is quarterback-friendly route-running. He could make for a plug-and-play possession target.”

Allen last season with the Chicago Bears caught 70 passes for 744 yards receiving and seven touchdowns, along with averaging 10.6 yards per reception. He also was targeted 121 times. It is a little surprising that Allen is still a free agent. Him and Rodgers would work well together with the Steelers, but Allen may not sign with Pittsburgh and look to go elsewhere for the 2025 NFL season.
