Report: Kings eyeing stars, seek long-term solution at PG

It’s becoming crystal clear what the Sacramento Kings’ top priority is heading into the offseason: Finding a starting point guard.

Sacramento traded star guard De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs during February’s trade deadline following a falling out with the former Clutch Player of the Year award winner, and now they are setting their sights on two big names that could become available on the trade market.

According to RG Media‘s Grant Afseth, the Kings have shown interest in Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young and Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland as potential long-term solutions for their point guard position.

Per Afseth’s reporting, Garland is a player that Sacramento is targeting this summer. However, the fact that the two-time All-Star recently underwent toe surgery, which will keep him out for the start of next season, could hinder the Kings’ interest.

Although the Cavs put together a 64-win season in 2024-25, they could look to reshape their roster after falling short to Indiana in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Moving Garland and allowing star guard Donovan Mitchell to run the point full-time appears to be a possibility for Cleveland.

Garland holds career averages of 18.9 points, 2.7 rebounds, 6.7 assists, and 1.2 steals per game on 45/38/86 shooting splits over six seasons.

Another player that Sacramento has been rumored to be interested in, dating back to last season, is Young. Afseth reports that the Kings and Hawks held trade talks in recent weeks, but those conversations have stalled in recent days.

Young enjoyed an impressive 2024-25 season, averaging 24.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, and a career-high 11.6 assists per game, although his shooting percentages dropped to 41 percent from the field and 34 percent from deep.

Trading for either player could prove challenging for Sacramento, both from an asset and roster construction standpoint, as acquiring Garland (due for $39.4 million in 2025-26) or Young (due $46 million in 2025-26) would likely mean that one of Domantas Sabonis ($43.6 million) or Zach LaVine ($47.5 million) would need to be included in the framework of a deal.

Young, a four-time All-Star and the reigning NBA assists champion, is eligible for a four-year, $229 million extension. The Hawks may hold off on trade talks involving the 26-year-old until those negotiations conclude.

During his introductory press conference, recently-hired Kings general manager Scott Perry said that “it’s no secret” Sacramento needs to find a point guard this offseason. With two weeks to go until the NBA Draft, it appears that he’s canvassing the league early in his tenure with the organization.

What’s next for the Sacramento Kings offseason?

Although the Sacramento Kings do not own a first-round pick, they are in the process of preparing for June 25-26th’s 2025 NBA Draft.

Sacramento’s first-round pick was finally conveyed to Atlanta in what was the final ripple effect from the 2022 offseason trade that brought Kevin Huerter to the Kings.

While they won’t select in the first round, Sacramento owns the 42nd pick in the draft, meaning they will select at least one player on Day 2 (June 26th) of the draft.
