Man Utd need more grit in midfield and they could fill the Scott McTominay sized hole with a move for a Serie A rival.

European football’s show piece event can sometimes be a damp squid, however, Paris Saint Germain showed to everyone watching how important an energetic and aggressive midfield is.

Manchester United’s midfield was too easy to play through at times last season with Bruno Fernandes the only member to escape any criticism, he can’t do it all on his own. That Fernandes has decided to stay at United gives Ruben Amorim a fighting chance of building a team that can compete next season.

Several mistakes were made last summer and one that can’t be missed is the decision to sell Scott McTominay for £25m. The Scotland international is now a Serie A title winner as well as the league’s player of the year. McTominay didn’t just prove his point, he hammered it home with a 10-tonne truck.

Man Utd should add Scottish steel to midfield with Lewis Ferguson move

Winner of the best No.8 in his first season in Italy, Bologna’s Lewis Ferguson didn’t quite hit the ground running in the same manner as his international teammate, but guiding Bologna to the Champions League – twice – and a Coppa Italia success, their first for 51-years, isn’t to be sniffed at.

Ferguson also wears the armband now, speaks fluent Italian and is primed to make a move to a “bigger” club. A host of Serie A sides have been linked with the 25-year old and the Red Devils should rekindle their interest in Ferguson that was reported by Football Italia from last summer.

What has Ferguson said about a possible Premier League move?

He has proven that he can play at the highest level and the lure of the Premier League would be enough to tempt Ferguson to Old Trafford, as told to Transfermarkt: "When I was growing up, it was always a dream and that's not really changed too much. star.

"At some point in my career, I would love to go and test myself. When you're brought up in the UK and playing in Scotland and watching a lot of Scottish football, it's like the next step is to go to the Premier League.

"It's just natural for players in Scotland. But yeah, it's something I would like to do at some point in my career.

“If it'll ever happen, I don't know. Or when, I'm not sure.

"But like I said, I’m very happy here, playing in Italy and enjoying the lifestyle and the culture over here.

"I just want to do the best for my club, always try and be available, try and be fit and try and perform for the coach and the team and just try and do the best I can."

A new-look United needs players who won’t shy away from hard work and who can lift those around them, Ferguson could be the man to not only replace McTominay, but provide the missing steel in the engine room that Amorim is desperate for.
