Arteta convinced Real Madrid star would have major Arsenal impact

Mikel Arteta is convinced Rodrygo could be a key player at Arsenal, but the winger is delaying potential transfer talks for now, according to a report.

Mario Cortegana reports for The Athletic that Rodrygo has already been approached through intermediaries by some Premier League clubs, with Arsenal among them.

The Gunners like Rodrygo and feel he can add a new dimension to their attack, but the player’s father and agent don’t want to enter into negotiations until the winger has spoken to Real Madrid and Xabi Alonso.

Rodrygo wants to feel important and feels more comfortable playing on the left or centrally, rather than on the right. So it’s up to Alonso to convince him he’ll have a key role in one of those positions.

At Arsenal, it’s clear that Rodrygo would have the role he desires. Cortegana reports that Mikel Arteta is convinced the player would have a big role in north London.

David Ornstein confirms for the same outlet that Rodrygo has admirers at Arsenal, though he adds that Nico Williams and Anthony Gordon are in the same boat. The Gunners clearly have options this summer, none of whom are likely to come cheap.

For the time being, Rodrygo will be focusing on the Club World Cup with Real Madrid. As much as anything else, the competition will give him a good sense of how Alonso plans to use him, and whether he’s a good fit for the new coach’s system.

Rodrygo has scored 14 goals and assisted a further 10 in 51 appearances for Real Madrid so far this season, but he’s been on a goal drought since he netted against Atletico Madrid on March 4th.

If things don’t click with Alonso’s arrival, Arsenal may feel they have an opening to lure the winger away.
