After a quiet transfer window this time last year, it’s a different story for Liverpool and Arne Slot this time around. The club have already completed the signings of Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong and Puskas’ Armin Pecsi.

The Reds are looking to strengthen further before the 2025/26 season and the defence of their Premier League title. One deal being worked on is the big-money signing of Florian Wirtz.

A deal for the Leverkusen man will smash the Reds’ current transfer record. The 22-year-old scored 10 goals and provided a further 13 assists in 31 Bundesliga appearances in the season just gone. Amid the talks over a move to Liverpool, he was on the scoresheet for Germany.

As a deal continues to be worked on, here is a look at the latest surrounding the German international’s future and a potential move to Anfield.

‘Significantly closer’ claim amid compromise

Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen are ‘significantly closer’ to reaching a deal for Wirtz, according to German outlet Bild.

The report says that Leverkusen are expecting a final written offer from Liverpool with an agreement seemingly getting closer. It has beenreported by the ECHO this week that the Reds have made a £113million bid for the player.

Leverkusen are however thought to be holding out for a fee closer to £126million, with a compromise expected.

Transfer delay

With a deal seemingly getting closer, the Reds could face a slight delay in officially getting the transfer over the line. The early mini transfer window closes at 7pm Tuesday night, meaning that deals done after then will not be officially completed until the window re-opens on Monday, June 16.

The mini window has been introduced this summer so that teams involved in the Club World Cup can add to their squad before the tournament.

The transfer window being closed doesn’t mean that negotiations have to stop though. Clubs can still announce deals, that will then officially go through on June 16.

When the window re-opens, it will remain open until the second deadline on September 1 (7pm).

Medical update

Wirtz could potentially undergo a medical ahead of a move to Anfield ‘next week’, according to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg.

It is reported that things could move very quickly in terms of getting the deal done with a full agreement between the clubs ‘very close.’
