Manchester City could be in line for a major financial boost owing to the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.

City are preparing to take part in the inaugural format of the (revamped) competition, which is being held in the United States this summer. Pep Guardiola's squad will be joined by Chelsea as the only two Premier League clubs featuring at the tournament.

City have been placed in Group G of the Club World Cup and will play group games against Wydad AC, Al-Ain and Juventus in the initial phase of the competition. Should City progress, they face the prospect of having last-16, quarter-final and semi-final ties before the final - which takes place at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 13.

The Club World Cup will feature a total prize fund worth a whopping £775million, which includes participation and performance-based prizes. City could, potentially, receive £97million from their efforts in the tournament - if results go their way across the Atlantic.

Each win in the group stages would be worth £1.5million for City - meaning the potential for £4.5million from the initial phase of the competition. City would then receive a further £5.8million from progressing to the round of 16, followed by another £10.2million if they reached the quarter-final.

If City were to then progress to the semi-final, that would then bank them another £16.3million. There is also the potential for City to receive a further £31million in prize money from winning the Club World Cup.

Of the £775million being provided by FIFA, a total of £407million will be handed out to clubs participating in the competition. If City are ranked as the top European club based on FIFA's metrics, then they stand to gain another £29.6million - just from participating in the tournament.
