Diego Simeone has seemingly confirmed Liverpool interest in Julian Alvarez.

The Reds have been tentatively linked to the Argentina international throughout the season, but Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the Anfield club had concrete intentions last summer when Alvarez made the move to Atletico Madrid.

The Argentina international has enjoyed a spectacular debut season at Atletico Madrid, netting 29 goals across all competitions in what has been the most prolific campaign of his career.

Alvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, publicly acknowledged Liverpool’s prior pursuit of his client before his move to Spain.

“I confirm that Liverpool was interested in Julian last summer,” Hidalgo said earlier this season. “As for the future, this is not the right time to talk about it, as Julian is participating in important tournaments and is fully focused on them.”

It is a kind of signing that most Liverpool fans could only dream of, and it’s generally accepeted that it’s a transfer that won’t happen.

Atletico Madrid secured Alvarez’s services for an initial £65 million with a potential £17 million in add-ons.

This would mean any offer from the Reds would have to exceed or at least match that outlay.

Now Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has responded to some of the rampant speculation, and believes it’s “logical” for a player of that calibre to always have speculation swirling around:

“Everything is logical, I can’t imagine any other scenario,” Simeone told La Nacion.

“Julian is 25 years old, he’s an extraordinary player, with hunger, with enthusiasm, with humility, with work, with goals, with hierarchy.”

He then mentioned Liverpool directly:

“How could everyone not want him? And Barcelona, PSG, Arsenal, Liverpool… the best have to want him.”

“And for us, Atletico fans, it should be a source of pride that everyone wants him. Why? Because he’s ours.”

“And since he’s ours, we have to take care of him. We have to help him feel happy.”

He then hinted that he aims to keep the 25-year-old at the club by winning things and thereby keeping him “happy”

“How will he feel happy? By winning. And to get there, we all have to give 110%.”

“And not just for him, of course, but for everyone.”
